Saturday Morning News

Nature Will Continue to Kick Our Asses: The snow is melting but wind is on the way. 225,000 homes and businesses were without power yesterday, according to Puget Sound Energy.

Bus Crash Thursday Morning: Caused by a man who refused to pay his full fare and then punched the driver in the face, according to police:

At 6:10 a.m. Thursday, the bus was moving in the 4300 block of 15th Avenue Northeast when the suspect paid the driver $1.50 and demanded a transfer. When the driver refused, the man punched the driver in the face, causing the bus to crash into a street-side tree, a Seattle Police investigator told the court. The man is alleged to have punched the driver a second time before a passing patrol officer arrived on the scene.

South Carolina Primary! It's today! I'm sorry to say that it's only the third primary or caucus and it's only January.

Speaking of South Carolina: My husband-who-just-doesn't-know-it-yet Stephen Colbert hosted a rally this morning that drew thousands of students. He urged his supporters to vote for Herman Cain, who is actually on the ballot, and delivered a stirring speech:

“There are cynics who say you have to be a billionaire to have your voice heard in Washington,” Colbert said. “Wrong. You just have to know a billionaire.”

Redistricting in Texas: The Supreme Court threw out the map drawn by a federal court because it had "ambiguous standards." Why does this matter? Texas is getting four new congressional seats and the district map will determine whether Democrats or Republicans can win them.

Nigeria: At least 120 are dead after bombings in Kano. Boko Haram, the group that allegedly bombed churches on Christmas Day, took the credit.

Some Headlines Speak for Themselves (and Are Very Long): "Knocking back the brewskis: Putin reaffirms macho image with football and beer session (but why isn't he watching the game?)"

Violence in Syria: Not over.

I'm sure many of you have already seen this, but it's only 55 seconds and it makes me smile. Happy Saturday!

What?! No mention of Kenny G's impending divorce? Where are your priorities?

@1, It's gonna be a bumpy ascent...

Punch a bus driver and refuse to pay the same fare? Meet the entitlement class.

Wow - that punched bus driver broke his leg. Must have been quite a crash. I'm surprised no passengers were hurt.

Obama has more charisma in that clip than all the GOP candidates combined. It is clearly making conservatives (more) insane.

@2, that's old news. Get with the program. Today's news is that Seal and Heidi Klum are divorcing.

Obama has charisma? Perhaps to some. The President is beginning to recognize that he has a bitterly cold and aloof image.

"..Seal and Heidi Klum are divorcing."

Thank the gods, if that babe will marry a guy who looks like Seal, than I may still have a chance (not as talented Seal, but I'm definitely more ugly than him....).

Finally, Obama has done something I can appreciate and imitated someone I can appreciate --- as opposed to supporting, then signing the NDAA, giving the government and military unlimited power in the indefinite detention of EVERYONE.

And, his staged "jobs and competitiveness" commission, which comes back with the same old predictable pro-Wall Street drivel, "cut taxes on the corporations" (just who are these bloody corps. which still pay taxes?????) and "do away with all regulations on the corporations" (Just what bloody regulations are still remaining after Reagan-Bush-Clinton-Bush-Obama?????).

And how is Mitt the Twitt different from Obama......

@10: if "some" = hundreds of millions of Americans, then yes, "some" think he's charismatic. i won't worry because he's not backslapping inside the beltway. try again.

She's all yours, Doom. All you've got to do is put up with her four young kids by two different men other than you. Good luck!

5280, my hope is that they're divorcing but will stay together as cohabitants. Their habit while married of renewing their vows lavishly every fucking year was a big clue they didn't need to be married to begin with. Here's an excerpt from my new favorite study:
"We found that differences between marriage and cohabitation tend to be small and dissipate after a honeymoon period. Also while married couples experienced health gains -- likely linked to the formal benefits of marriage such as shared healthcare plans -- cohabiting couples experienced greater gains in happiness and self-esteem. For some, cohabitation may come with fewer unwanted obligations than marriage and allow for more flexibility, autonomy, and personal growth" said Musick.
"Compared to most industrial countries America continues to value marriage above other family forms," concluded Musick. "However our research shows that marriage is by no means unique in promoting well-being and that other forms of romantic relationships can provide many of the same benefits."

Adorable! These families would love to "stay together," but they were blown to bloody pieces because of Obama's policies.

Still, what a guy!

Gus, I've said similar things all along. I've done both, and honestly, I kinda scratch my head about so many gays wanting to get married. It certainly ain't all it's cracked up to be.

#19 - and the water coming out of the white drinking fountains is the exact same water that comes out of the colored ones. And you get there just as quickly in the back of the bus as in the front.

Yeah, it'll be nice when we've had marriage equality for awhile, let the institution deglamorize.

I'm with you, 5280, except I wonder why ANYONE would want to get married.

Next time around, I'm shacking up. Cohabitating. Whatever.

and thank you, Gus, for that article. I followed the references to the article, and used it in my homework this week.
