NBC Calls South Carolina for Newt Gingrich

Posted by on Sat, Jan 21, 2012 at 4:01 PM

NBC says Newt Gingrich just won South Carolina. That was fast:

Newt Gingrich has won the South Carolina Republican primary, capping off a remarkable comeback for his presidential bid that reshapes the trajectory of the battle for the GOP nomination.

Based on early exit polls, NBC News projects Gingrich as the winner of the primary, while former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney will finish second.

Huffington Post says : "Gingrich is projected to get 38 percent of the votes, Mitt Romney will get 29 percent, Rick Santorum will get 17 percent and Ron Paul will get 15 percent." If that turns out to be close to right, Santorum won't back out tonight.
