Lunchtime Quickie: Remember Two Days Ago...

Posted by on Fri, Jan 20, 2012 at 12:05 PM

....when the snow was still fun? Here's a video of sledding on Denny Hill and "cross country skiing" in Volunteer Park, video by Austin Goldberg. And then there's this filmed by Brian Behrens: city-boarding!

Oh also, today's reality. Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn shows you how to clean a storm drain with a shovel. Video filmed by McGinn's 12 year old son, outside of their house in Greenwood.

I remember making $5 to $10 shoveling driveways ... wonder how many kids made some extra cash these past few days ...

I know there are people who want the snow to melt but when it does melt, and it melts fast, it creates an ugly muddy mess that is irritating to try to walk through especially with cars that careen through the muddy slush spraying it all over people walking. Oh, and it creates floods too

Funny. I road a couple of lines through the steep back country hills behind the reservoir in Volunteer Park. Epic.

I was here on Tuesday. Chest deep cold smoke powder everywhere. Unbelievable.

Ah. Yeah. Remember all the piles of shit like the tell-tale hipster PBR cans and upturned garbage bins these fucking douche-bags left all over my neighborhood and yard.

What a lovely video, though spoiled by the marketing-speak tag line at the end.

FYI, I didn't leave any shit lying around... actually I cleaned up a bunch of shit. You're welcome @6 ;)

Cool video...thanks!

In 2002, the newly-elected Socialist Party mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoë, came up with the idea to create a beach along the Seine in the summer and they've been doing it now for ten years (photos here.)

Obviously, doing something like this here with snow is impractical, since snow melts and sand doesn't, and we usually get one snowfall each winter anyway, but it would be great to have an in-city hill for skiing/boarding/sliding. One of the things I miss about living in the Twin Cities is being able to drive a short distance and go cross-country skiing in a park like Wirth Park. Granted, it's not as scenic as being in the Cascades but you're also not burning up a lot of gas to get there.

Yo I was sledding all over the hill, it was mad fun! we were drinkin sparks and using garbage can lids that we stole from some apartment. pretty sure we threw most of the sparks cans in the bushes though so it wasnt us who littered yo!

@9 - much agreed! I'm from Wisconsin originally where sledding hills or snow covered back yards were plentiful.

@8 I'm assuming you're kidding.

I'm sure you know that attempting to solicit thanks for doing something you're socially obligated to do in the first place is pretty lame. So you wouldn't do that.

Example: Hey, I'm not kicking you in the nuts. You're welcome!

And if you were in my hood? You did a half-assed job. So I wouldn't be obliged to thank you.

Maybe you weren't in my hood and again no thanks necessary.

I suppose I could appreciate the effort. If I was the sort who gave out gold stars just for golly-gosh self-esteem and showing up to school, etc. But I'm not.

Like I said. I'll assume the best and that you're attempting satire of the douche bags who littered all over our hood and that part of that joke is then demanding you be thanked for meeting minimum social expectations. And you know I am clearly NOT thanking you.

And that's funny.

I guess I'm really not that smart. I'm just some dumb ass who lives on the hill, picks up other peoples trash and dog shit from time to time and try to leave as little of impact on the environment around me as possible. I also enjoy snowboarding...

Denny is a mess. I went down it once on my board. I walked by it the past 2 days and was disgusted by what was left behind. I have not spent my afternoons cleaning it up though. Sorry for that, but I'm sure you haven't either troll.

Hope that isn't a pricey snowboard, cuz it's no doubt gouged to shit by now.

Forum Youngblood I bought at the snocon warehouse sale 2 years ago for riding in the park. Was already a bit messed up... even more now. Asphalt is the worst.

I'm not the biggest McGinn fan in the world, but I gotta say, I kinda like this little video -- and the fact it was created by his son.

BTW, McGinn here reminds me just a teeny tiny bit of Mister Rogers....

Aww, how cute. He's taking care of his property like a good landowner should. Too bad I don't own the land I'm living on, so he's dreaming if he thinks I'm going to be cleaning that shit up.

11, always nice to meet a fellow ex-Midwesterner. Too bad we can't have snow-covered hills but clear streets. Bertrand Delanoë for Seattle mayor!

@13 Your last sentence is strange. I'm a troll because I was offended that people thrashed the hill? Or that you did what you were supposed to do by cleaning up?

Or. Am I a troll for not cleaning up someplace I didn't litter? (which makes no sense). That I desire people to behave at a minimum respectful of their community doen't imply that I must therefor be held hostage to their poor actions when they do not.

(Do you feel judged for not cleaning up what you didn't litter on Denny? Well. I'm not judging you for not cleaning up all of the Hill.)

I always thought trolling is being deliberately provocative or disingenuous on a forum. My initial comment was in no way provocative (littering is nearly universally seen as bad), though strongly worded. And I was completely genuine.

If you expected my first comment to be prefaced with thanks for those who were NOT assholes and did NOT litter you are being unreasonable.

My somewhat pedantic and sanctimonious hope is that future sledding generations will understand the point of being a socially responsible human is not to expect people to bow and thank them for simply not being assholes and clean up their shit. That is reasonable.

TLDR; If you did what you should then my first comment didn't apply to you.

Ah. See #17. Now THAT'S how trolling is done, people. Just keep it simple.

@tkc - your life is comprised of pathetic attempts of witticism and quips in stating the literal. I'm so happy you're putting your English degree to good use. Get off The Stranger's Slog and do something with your life. NO ONE FUCKING CARES. Let's see your video.

@23 Aw. That's sweet. Sure you care. You cared enough to take all that time and create a single comment sockpuppet to leave a drive-by. I'm flattered. Classic fake-consensus troll! (pro-tip: leave a user account active for this sort of thing so at least there is a posting history). Man. I guess I was right. I really got to you. The guilt must be unbearable.

Can't we all just get along? I like the tagline personally. Wasn't supposed to change your life, just make one smile. Hope you all enjoy the rest of our winter.
