2012 / Election Santorum Wins! (Iowa)

Remember how the national press kept fawning over Mitt Romney's historic sweep of both Iowa and New Hampshire, making him the first Republican to win both those two contests ever? Oops...

Rick Santorum’s campaign claimed a belated victory in the Iowa caucuses on Thursday morning after certified results from the contest showed him leading Mitt Romney by 34 votes, a reversal from the eight-vote edge for Mr. Romney on caucus night.

Of course he did. But since the only thing really up for grabs in the Iowa caucuses was the immediate perception of victory, Romney remains the real winner.

It's interesting (and sketchy) that they managed to misplace the results from eight precincts. We'll never know who the winner actually was.

Damn. The Iowa caucus winner NEVER wins the candidacy, so I was really hoping it would stick for Romney. I can't believe Huntsman dropped out of the race already.

You seem to be under the impression that these so-called "votes" mean anything. They do not. What matters is delegates. What's the delegate count from Iowa now?

Of course, there is no delegate count in Iowa. As I explained pre-caucus, all delegates are unbound at the county and congressional district levels, and the final slate isn't chosen until the state convention.

@ 6, just in case you believe a phrase like "But since the only thing really up for grabs in the Iowa caucuses was the immediate perception of victory..." is the same as "What matters is delegates." ... They're not. Sure, they both come from the common perception that the votes don't matter, but your glib conclusion is simply that - glib. Not perceptive, not witty, just glib.

Didn't Santorum make a whole lot of money after the Iowa Caucus? Isn't Santorum now able to spend a lot of money in the swing states? Doesn't poling high in swing states result in more money?

Aren't you guys always saying that money is all that matters in National elections?
