The Oppo File on Mitt Romney

Posted by on Wed, Jan 18, 2012 at 8:50 AM

Hey, look what turned up online: Something that appears to be John McCain's entire opposition research book on Mitt Romney from 2008.

"I thought becoming rich and famous would make me happy," Romney is quoted as saying on page 200. "Boy was I right."

There is a Romney in there who actually seems like a pretty decent republican. Personally socially conservative, but realizes that government should respect people's choices. Fiscally conservative but willing to compromise with others to try and solve problems like the uninsured. I wonder if that guys will come back once the primary is over?

@4 Obi-Wan once thought as you did. You don't know the power of the dark side. Romney must obey his masters.

Ahem. Look at John McCain, he had a pretty independent-minded streak of his own, but in order to cinch the nomination and run in the general election, he had to align himself tout suite with Republican orthodoxy. It's simple electoral politics, the Republican party is smaller than the Democrats not only in terms of members but ideology and policy. Any Republican candidate must adhere (generally) to the party line if they hope to snap up the nomination, and from there only move to the center enough to ensure that they gain enough independents (a group larger in absolute terms than either the Dems or GOP.)

Romney is actually a perfect example of just how far a GOP front runner is allowed to stray from orthodoxy before it impacts him (Mr. 22%) something only possible with a vast warchest.

Of course, this is further complicated by the electoral college and our first-past-the-post system, but that's another Slog post.

Reading attack lit from the McCain camp is kind of funny: in 2002 Romney suggested a 10% tax on all political donations. For me, this would be a point in Romney's favor.
