The Morning News (Or: Snow News Day)

OMG OMG OMG SNOW! Cliff Mass predicts "a very modest affair" in Puget Sound. But even a modest affair is worth taking the day off for, right?

King County Superior and District courts are closed. There will be no garbage (or yardwaste, or recycling) pickup in Seattle today. Public health centers may have limited service. Seattle public schools are closed. Metro is on snow routes. But! The City of Seattle plans to dig you out with an emergency widget.

Also, the Seattle Department of Transportation—obviously under orders to show some bravado lest the current mayor be accused of timid plowing, too—is sending out press releases titled "SDOT Takes on Mother Nature!"

As the much anticipated winter storm makes its arrival, the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is out in full force ensuring the roadways are safe for travel, especially bus and emergency vehicle routes. Ready for whatever comes, the department has deployed 30 plow trucks for clearing major arterials and four tanker trucks are applying anti-icer to elevated roadways and known trouble spots along the snow route network. Motorists are urged to help out by making way for the snow response trucks.

In addition: online plowing progress updates!

However: "SDOT reminds property owners that they are responsible for clearing snow and ice off sidewalks adjacent to their properties."

Check what the roadways look like (and laugh at stupid drivers from your couch) right here.

Or, if you need to head out in your car, check out which roads are plowed first with this handy PDF.

Also: The SOPA protest is on, everyone's still waiting for Romney's tax returns, and the Italian cruise ship captain says he only abandoned ship because he tripped and fell into a lifeboat.

What a sad sad day, shutting down the city over two inches of snow that hadn't even fallen yet. Seattle really is the pussiest city in this nation.

Did anyone else think of Dan's "How'd that happen?" letters when they read of the Italian captain's "trip" into a lifeboat?

Oh hey, while there's snow on the ground, mind doing me a favor and hitting Dominic Holden in the face with a good ice ball? You don't have to include pebbles, but it would be more fun that way, wink nudge.

Capitol Hill expects many more inches than that. Capitol Hill can take all the inches you give them.

And may I also suggest "Snow News Is Good News".

Clearly the hot air hovering over capitol hill must be affecting the amount of snow falling.

Seriously, people who haven't driven in snow before should not take their vehicles out on the public streets and highways in the snow. Even two inches is enough to make noobs fuck up, bad.

Be considerate of others, leave the car home. Or get some snow-tested friend to drive you to a parking lot somewhere where you can play and get the feel of slip-sliding around and what it takes to control the thing.

If you haven't got at least mud & snow rated tire tread in decent condition, just forget it altogether.

@6: Only hitting with the same sort of class Mr. Holden graces his readers with.

I used to remind people not to slam their brakes but to pump them when they're sliding. But now they all have anti-lock brakes and I've never driven a vehicle with those.

@12 - Or maybe you're just an oversensitive douche? It makes me think that your "pussiest city" herp is really just projection.

@2, if we had the equivalent of the MTA and the LIRR, we would be very functional, but a serious lack of right of way public transportation changes the dynamics.

@14: Not being oversensitive when a "reporter" claims that the story is what he feels like writing, not the facts of what actually happened. You can keep crying into your whiskey though.

@16: To what exactly are you referring? Also, iceballs because you disagree with some one? What are you? Five? Also 2 inches of snow on an overpass that loses 300 feet in elevation in 3 blocks (Denny) is not something to take lightly. Let's see you drive up or down it, little mister. Then you can take crack at Queen Ann Hill and after that try getting down Lucille from Beacon Hill. Then, if you're still in one piece, we'll go to the east side, and see how you do in Issaquah.
