@1 yeah, that would work really well for a paper about evolution!

anyway, people whining about wikipedia being closed today (for only 24 hours people!) has got to be a definition of "first world problems"

MacCrocodile 3
It's amazing how upset the illiterate get when a website full of words goes on hiatus.

Matt from Denver 4
If "I'm 85 Years Old" isn't around, I'll have to channel him and observe that these punks need to get down to the library and crack open a book.

These are the same young people that say they don't want to get involved in politics. Well look how you get pulled into politics whether you want it or not. Ghee.

I hope google still works, cause I've gotta look up where the school library is.

bandwidth exceeded! I think seattle shut down the Internet by simultaneously clicking links off of slog postings on snow day.

Sigh. "Is it still possible to access Wikipedia in any way? Yes. During the blackout, Wikipedia is accessible on mobile devices and smart phones. You can also view Wikipedia normally by disabling JavaScript in your browser, as explained on this Technical FAQ page. Our purpose here isn't to make it completely impossible for people to read Wikipedia, and it's okay for you to circumvent the blackout. We just want to make sure you see our message."

Fifty-Two-Eighty 11
All these dumbasses should just blow off their essays and become occutards. They'd fit right in.

Teachers all over the nation must be giggling at the sudden return of "Webster's defines disappointment as..."

Supreme Ruler Of The Universe 13

Wikipedia Google-bombed itself because all the news articles about it going dark are showing in the hit list before the site itself.

The best one is the guy who immediately called for Jesse Jackson's help. The saddest are the ones blaming Obama. Really? Really?

Protip: The mobile version of Wikipedia is unaffected.

I bet this guy has written some hilarious essays.

Uhh..??? Out of touch readers, please be aware thatk-12 schools don't expect students to be using books for research anymore and are not trying to maintain collections that allow them to do so. We have put a lot of pressure on public libraries to go the same route, but those pesky "librarians" resist the obvious need to save money and turn over control of the information to people in control of far away servers. I'm afraid austerity ideology has been ascendent since long before 2008.

P.S. For kids, Wikipedia is very user friendly compared to other online encyclopedias and often has better information and uptodate accessible links to original sources, but my kids have always used books too, most often because there is way better and more interesting information and analysis available in books.

They're all so confused, yet it says right there on the blackout page exactly why and for how long, with a link to more information. These net-savvy kids can't actually read.

Knat 21
@11: I really, really hope you're coining that term right now. Or do red staters always apply a -tard suffix after the first or second syllable of things they don't like, Fifty-kun?
Posted by Knat on January 18, 2012 at 1:55 PM

Or you can just press "Esc" before the article hops to the blackout page. Problem solved.

@20: Well, they can, but...
Can someone tell me why wikipedia block off for the day I don't wanna read

What you do is you click on your link to wikipedia here www.wikipedia.org and then click the stop load button when the load is halfway through (you kinda need to be a little quick about it)

The wikipedia loads as usuall. But for every new link you will have to do the same thing again (click stop loading)

And lo, 20somethings finally get a clue....This reminds me of my prepubescent boss who famously said "there were 2 Germanies?"

Seriously. How do you use the internet daily and not know what SOPA is?
