As Reddit Comes Back Online, Be Sure to Visit the Fake Reddit on Twitter

Posted by on Wed, Jan 18, 2012 at 4:51 PM

If the casual racism and sexism of Reddit* bugs you, this very funny #altreddit thread on Twitter is worth a look:

Reddit does a lot of good—they were banging the drum on SOPA before almost anyone—but some of these satirical Tweets are dead fucking on.

* To say nothing of the white privilege, the lack of empathy, the proud libertarianism, and the super-heavy injokiness of Reddit.

About 80 percent of reddit really sucks. I think its because the majority of users are still in high school or something. Or some people just really like repeating the same jokes over and over again. There are some pretty good subreddits though.

Dear Lord, I thought I was being unreasonable when I quit reddit because its elitism started to bug me just a little too much. Thank you for showing me that other people feel the same way. YES

Oh my, that one about the engineering degree is just perfect.

I guess I haven't spent enough time on Reddit, because I haven't encountered any of the sexism (or maybe I'm not as sensitive to it, being a straight white male in the US?), though the lack of empathy is shown in spades on r/libertarian, as one would expect.

The politics and worldnews forums are still the best place a couple times a day to get an instant look at the biggest domestic political and world news. Just avoid the comments sections.

@4 - You answered your own question, re: your white maleness.

@6 - It's true - straight white dudes are always totally unaware of sexism, unlike, say gay white dudes or white ladies.

I'm pretty sure that engineering tweet is something my father (the engineer) would actually say...

Wow, this place is like if all the creeps from my high school and college founded a website.

Also- and I know this would piss them off to no end if you told them- the parallels between Reddit and 4chan are striking. My guess is 70-80% audience overlap.

Reddit is almost too warm and fuzzy. 4chan is what you are describing.

What no mocking of Reddit's strident atheism & defense of civil liberties? Oh, right...

@10 Don't get me wrong, Reddit is all dressed up and has some form of content control. 4chan is the speakeasy to which they retreat and where the casual misogyny/racism/etc becomes overt.

I wonder if this is the future for the cisgendered middle-class white American male mind; slightly more socially liberal, but festooned with fear and loathing of "opression" from women, blacks, and oh jeez I just answered my own question didn't I?

Wow, ya'll don't get out much from the bubble, do you? Reddit is what goes for moderate to far left in the new America.

I like how over the years the stranger has evolved into this pro-establishment, conservative rag. libertarianism is far more broad-minded and progressive than anything you guys have going on. having a vagina, bring gay, or "of color" isn't exactly radical anymore.

@14, 15: Y'know, you don't have to repost your entire comment just to correct a simple typo. It's actually more annoying if you do.

Also:

Since when is "fuck you, I got mine" broad-minded or progressive?

having a vagina, being gay, or "of color" isn't exactly radical anymore.

We all know this. Your presidential candidate does not.

@4 Try /r/shitredditsays for a helpful collection of examples of the less attractive side of reddit.

@18: /r/shitredditsays not only highlights stupid shit on reddit; it is itself one of the most awful piles of shit on reddit.

Everything that's wrong with reddit is due to the average person being a dipshit and not feeling the social pressure to shut the fuck up that they feel in real life. Whether it's the kind of crap being mocked in those tweets or it's the non-stop "LOOK AT MY DOG!" "HERE'S A PIC OF ME WITH TOMMY LEE! REMEMBER HIS PENIS?", or the constant avalanche of long past their expiration date memes.

/r/SRS comments on average are as bad as any of the popular subreddits. It's god awful. The whole site is a shithole and gets worse every day as more idiots call it home.

Wow, i just started using Reddit and had no idea it had accumulated such a well of rage beneath it. Surprise - huge website with huge readership and participation does not reflect your ideal society.

MensRights is fantastic. Plenty of elitism and sexism around here. But nothing's perfect.

@12 misandry vs misogyny. take your pick i guess.

@21/22: "MensRights is fantastic. Plenty of elitism and sexism around here. But nothing's perfect." "misandry vs misogyny. take your pick i guess."

How is a lack of misogyny misandry? Your dichotomy is as retarded as your "meninist" tripe.

@23 i'm saying misandry is acceptable but misogyny (correctly) is not. it's about double standards and equality, not dichotomy. i'm not a "meninist" for what it's worth, i'm into equality and that it's not ok to single out any group and discriminate, though it is fashionable to single out and talk shit about white men. and i'm not talking about being persecuted, i'm just talking about hypocrisy and double standards. it's not about being traditionalist or patriarchal or misogynist whatever, which i'm not. it's about equality.

@24: Ah, the old "white men are so persecuted" yarn.

I hope you put that on your OKCupid profile, to pre-warn all the other wimmins about your "egalitarian" views.

@25 you're not understanding me. read: i don't feel "persecuted". it is just a fact that it is acceptable to rail on white men, but not any other race or gender. i could be a woman and say this and it would be just as true. google girlwriteswhat

and i don't have problems with women, but thanks. good luck yourself on okcupid.

@26: "t is just a fact that it is acceptable to rail on white men, but not any other race or gender"

Lord help you to imagine why that might be, or to investigate context.

Are you sincerely curious, or are you being willfully ignorant?

Intolerance of the intolerant, bigoted, and nasty is not the same thing as bigotry. It is not "equally as bad".

@28 You paint with some pretty broad strokes, UAR. All white men are "intolerant, bigoted, and nasty?" That's one hell of an axe to grind, ain't it? Youch!

@29: "All white men are "intolerant, bigoted, and nasty?"

I didn't say that. I'm saying those who are think people dislike them for being white instead of being hate-fueled.

People who complain that they "only" hate women because of feminism, or that they "only" hate black people because of being forced to integrate are working with the same screw loose. Neither is working to make the world more equal. Male-supremacism to the other's white supremacism.

Thank you so much for pointing this out to me. I wish I had seen it unfold in real time, and after reading it now, I want to to copy/paste almost everyone in here that you didn't already include. But I'll limit myself to this one:

#altreddit what is it with women? first she tells me video games aren't art, then insists we spend a day at a boring museum. i hate my mom.

It's not the most clever, but it did make me laugh.
