On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Rick Perry Encouraged War Between South Carolina and the Federal Government

Posted by on Tue, Jan 17, 2012 at 11:20 AM

Bits of last night's debate keep popping back up into my brain, like Vietnam flashbacks. I don't know how we have not already posted this on Slog already, this morning: A Republican audience tearing the roof off a Myrtle Beach hall when Rick Perry says "South Carolina is at war with this federal government."

If everyone can hear the scary racism in your debate performance, does it go from dog whistle politics to just plain whistle politics?

Because South Carolina made out real well the last time it went to war against the federal government.

So, Rick Perry wants to be President of the *ahem!* United States, so that he can dismantle the structural mechanisms that keep the States United?

Okaaaay....

Afterwards he got into the Monitor and sailed back to Texas.

Lee Atwater, former Chairman of the RNC and consultant for Reagan and G.H.W. Bush:
"You start out in 1954 by saying, "Nigger, nigger, nigger." By 1968 you can't say "nigger" — that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states' rights and all that stuff. You're getting so abstract now [that] you're talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you're talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is [that] blacks get hurt worse than whites. And subconsciously maybe that is part of it. I'm not saying that. But I'm saying that if it is getting that abstract, and that coded, that we are doing away with the racial problem one way or the other. You follow me — because obviously sitting around saying, "We want to cut this," is much more abstract than even the busing thing, and a hell of a lot more abstract than "Nigger, nigger."

Republicans keep babbling about how even desperately poor people should pay some income tax, so they have "skin in the game". How about taxing the churches then? Let's give the poor, beleaguered pederasts in the Catholic Church some skin in the game, already.

Oh, come on, I don't know what you're getting at. Myrtle Beach is nearly 90 miles northeast of Fort Sumter.

I don't know how he can say, "When I'm president..." without giggling.
