I Just Helped a Lady Change a Flat Tire in the Mud and the Snow and the Cold

Posted by on Tue, Jan 17, 2012 at 4:55 PM

Then I rode the bus home, encountering many cute women while sporting dirty hands and pants. She said, "Well, you've done your good deed for the month." Then at the end she changed it to two months. Exactly how long is this good deed good for?

Apparently it was just a minute--else she would have offered you a ride.

I voted 2 months, but just because the following wasn't an option:

"NONE - you GO TO HELL GRANT - you go to hell and YOU DIE - you sexist bastard, you're the reason why women still cannot change a flat tire!!!"

Would'a been worth twice as many points if you didn't post about it. Not trying to be a jerk, but that's how these points work.

Don't underestimate the appeal of dirty hands and pants. Being able to fix things is HOT!

I am afraid "lady" isn't worth any points Grant.

You need to hit some modifiers, like "old", "disabled", "in evening wear" or something.

"in the Mud and the Snow and the Cold" is worth many points, but you probably needed other modifiers like, "without a jack", "with a stripped lug" or "shower her how to do it" to really set your self up.

I gave you a year, because I am exceedingly grateful for the guy who stopped to help me change a flat once. I knew how to do it, but the lug nuts were on so tight that I couldn't loosen them. It took both of us to do it.

Why do you care about cute women, I thought the entire Stranger staff was gay? Or is "Grant" suddenly a women's name now?

(Not that there is anything wrong with the entire Stranger staff being gay -- in fact, that's one of the things I like about the Stranger, and would be a bit disappointed to discover non-gay staffers... Well, here's hoping Grant isn't just some vanilla straight guy -- bi, transgender, poly... something, anything, even furry would do)

It would have been good for the remainder of the day (these things reset once you go to sleep), but by posting about it you've cut it down to just about an hour to possibly an hour and a half.
The real thing to note here is that since you stopped and changed that tire you were delayed just long enough to not get hit on the head with an anvil/flattened by a piano/run over by a speeding locomotive/trampled by horses/whatever cartoon death was awaiting you around the corner.

#11 -I'm pretty sure the Mudede is straight. And all the women, no? But even if Grant's gay, he can still notice a cute girl.

I chose one minute, and if zero had been an option I would have chosen that. I'm sure that lady will remember you with gratitude for the rest of her life, and you should absolutely feel good about yourself every time you remember doing this for the rest of your own life. But if two minutes later you came across another person who needed help, you should help that person too! Not decide that you've already done your good deed for X amount of time.

...wait, maybe I'm overthinking this.
Good job, and thanks for helping someone who needed it. You are a good person.

Your good deed covers you until someone else, who you can help, needs your assistance. Then you're back on the clock. Simple as that. No one ever said it would be easy being on the Good side. But nice job, sir.

That was really nice of you to help her.
Changing a tire, even in the best of situations, is always a bummer. For anyone. Am I right?

On behalf of ladies and gentlemen everywhere, I thank you.

Until the Grant-Beacon once again lights up the night sky over the sleeping city Slotham. I assume you know what it looks like because I have no idea. Is that a cloud of smoke?

For all of you with a car and no Triple-A service to call:

When you have your tires changed, make sure that you tell the sales agent that you want the lug nuts tightened by hand...not with an impact wrench. The guy will probably look at you funny, but stand your ground and tell him that you once had a lug nut get stripped when you attempted to change a tire in the middle of the night. Don't worry that the story is not true, because it has happened to many a poor schmuck and you don't want it to actually happen to you.

When they bring your car out, have the worker loosen and then retighten a couple random nuts to make sure that they did it correctly. Then tip the guy $5.

Cheers

If you make it a point to dress like an artist every day, Grant, then when dirty hands and pants happen they will prolly only add to your appeal.

I once helped a nicely dressed woman in a sun hat (no helmet) get her chain untangled on the Burke-Gilman. I figured that was a good deed for a week, but no more.

Grant,
As a former Boy Scout, I recall the Boy Scout slogan "Do a Good Turn Daily"

So, daily dudester.

It isn't good for shit- and negates any good you may have done for each and every person you bragged this to. Keep the true blessings of helping others sacred, and secret. Tsk

The points ascribed to "good deeds" are like gods, entirely imaginary and given the exact value the believer would like them to have.

@16: Exactly. A good deed means very little if you think it can get you out of doing more good deeds.
