Hughes to Challenge Rep. McDermott in WA-07?

Posted by on Tue, Jan 17, 2012 at 1:59 PM

Seattle tax attorney Andrew Hughes, who announced this morning that he was bowing out of the crowded Democratic race in Washington's 1st Congressional District, is reportedly asking donors for their input on challenging long time incumbent Representative Jim McDermott in the largely Seattle-based 7th CD.

A source tells me that Hughes is pitching a "four-year plan," in which he runs and loses in 2012, to set himself up as the frontrunner in 2014, should the 75-year-old McDermott choose to retire. Uh-huh.

I've called Hughes to ask for comment, and have not yet heard back.

Any Democrat who challenges Jim McDermott will have written his own political epitaph, no matter how many Stranger-reading youth-cult hipsters think otherwise.

@2 - It certainly isn't Andrew Hughes.

McDermott is the guy you want #2. He's there on the votes. He's really 75? Last time I saw him I would have guessed early 60's at the oldest.

Yeah, that's a great strategy: "Hey, I totally got my ass handed to me by the incumbent two years ago, which makes me WAAAAY more qualified than my opponents to hold this office!"

@6, go for it. If we McDermott constituents want to replace him with someone who, just like Jim, puts all his energy into being exactly right all the time, but not into building consensus around his view in order to get any, y'know, legislation passed....then you'd be perfect.

@6 - Aren't you in the 9th now?

Regardless, this man is a fucking tool. There is already a deep bench ready to run for that seat when Rep. McDermott decides to step down (and it will be his decision). Some punk kid who nobody knows is not part of that bench.

@8, There's no law that says I have to live in the district I represent.

@6: Go for it. You're what i'm talking about.

& @4 & @7, I agree with both of you. I want a consensus building, articulate, passionate progressive. This city deserves it. Yes, mcdermott's right on the issues, but he is marginalized by the phone scandal and his own nature. He's a very nice man. But nice isn't getting our needs met or using our clout. We should have a representative as powerful as nancy pelosi and barney frank combined, as befitting the 7th's status as one of the most liberal districts IN AMURKA. Republicans should fear the 7th.

If Goldy's the one, fine by me.

@10, I agree completely. And if Goldy's the one, I will gladly eat my hat.
