Saturday Morning News

Officer Who Shot John T. Williams: Will receive no federal civil rights charges.

Gay Marriage Bill: Four Catholic bishops call for campaign to stop the same-sex marriage bill in Olympia.

Speaking of Men of the Cloth: A Seattle pastor admits to stealing $1.6 million from his parishioners.

In Mississippi: Former Governor Haley Barbour has no qualms about pardoning 200 people before leaving office (which I'm guessing is why he did it in the first place): "Barbour says he believes in second chances, and that he is totally at peace with his decision." The families of people murdered by the pardoned are less at peace.

In California: Police arrested a suspect in the search for the killer of four homeless men in northern Orange County.

Off the Coast of Italy: A cruise ship carrying almost 4,000 people ran aground. Three are confirmed dead and divers are searching for the 70 that are unaccounted for.

In Taiwan: President Ma Ying Jeou, the more China-friendly candidate, was re-elected.

That Was Fast: The US restored full diplomatic ties to Myanmar after the new civilian government enacted sweeping reforms, including releasing hundreds of political prisoners and calling a ceasefire with rebels.

As a Saturday morning gift from me to you, enjoy some nice, uplifting, joyful music from The National:

I know nobody on slog gives a shit about sports & all, but the M's just pulled off what probably amounts to one of the bigger trades in team history (and anyway I'd make the case that baseball isn't actually a sport, but rather a prolonged excuse to get drunk every night of the summer.) Thought it'd be mention worthy here.

I guess it's progress that the Good Ol' Boy network in Mississippi now extends from rich, old white dudes down to murderers of any race and class.

@4

I wonder what the racial breakdown is. Barbour, if I'm not mistaken, has a kind of racist background, like George Allen of Virginia.

@4 I can't comment of specific cases but the general idea of giving out pardons is a good one. You are never going to satisfy the victims - at some point you have to move on and give reformed ex-cons the right to vote and be apart of society again.

@7: Watch the clip. According to the story, Barbour likes to pardon men who kill their wives and do his laundry.

Time to examine the tax exempt status of four dioceses. Won't happen, though.

I really, really like "Bloodbuzz, Ohio". That and their one about eating brains and being eeevil were highlights of 2010 for me.

That is one way to solve the homeless problem. Who ever said immigrants don't do anything for this country.
