The Marriage Bill Arrives With 23 Senate Sponsors (And Two More Votes Needed)

Posted by on Fri, Jan 13, 2012 at 12:19 PM

The Washington State Senate bill to legalize same sex marriage has now been filed.

Its text is—or will soon be—available right here, where you can also see who requested the measure (Governor Chris Gregoire) and who's sponsoring it (Senator Ed "Stop popping the champagne corks and get to work!" Murray along with 23 others—including two Republicans).

@1: Coming soon. We are putting it together now, and will link it from the state senate vote-tracker (above Slog) once it's ready.

@2 Thanks for that. It's nice of you to do the foot work for us.

Can I get you to help me with Sound Transit?

There is a list at http://www.katu.com/news/local/AP-Suppor…, but I think it is a bit outdated in light of the recent filing. Looking forward to the Stranger's list.

@5 Thanks for the list. Looks like my sister's senator is undecided. She'll contact him now, she writes.

Maybe add the Vote Tracker to the top of Slog Mobile as well?

It looks like they missed a bit. In Section 6, they left in "husband and wife" language. Worse, that's the section defining the form of a valid ceremony.

Read the bill. Why is the implementation date so late? June 30, 2014? Why not 2013? or later in 2012?

It looks like the provisions with the 2014 date only refer to the conversion of existing domestic partnerships to marriages, and the circumstances under which that will and won't occur.

Laws take effect 90 days after the adjournment of the session, unless specified otherwise or challenged by referendum, so my read is that if we get the votes and can win the inevitable referendum campaign we'll have equal civil marriage in Washington this year.

I'm hopeful that two of the over half-dozen uncommitteds will say yes, especially since they're mostly in Western WA.

Andy Hill is my Senator. Sending an email as soon as I get an appropriately moving poem composed.

Okay, so no poem, but I closed with "Don't let Iowa make us look stupid."
