Mormons are the Niggers of America

Posted by on Thu, Jan 12, 2012 at 8:22 AM

For real:

A survey of adherents to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) released on Thursday found that almost half of Mormons in the US considered themselves more discriminated against than African Americans.

According to the research by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, suspicion spills over to political life with 32% of Mormons believing that Romney's religion will count against him in a presidential election. A little more than half say US voters will accept a Mormon in the White House.

While 97% of Mormons regard themselves as Christians, large numbers of other Americans do not because of the church's origins and some of its practices, including a belief that its present leader is a prophet from God.

So it's harder for regular white Americans to elect a regular white Mormon than a black American with an Islamic-sounding name?

Is that why Romney can't get a cab in New York?

One small mistake there. It is harder for Republicans - while "white" may be a good descriptor, "regular" is not.

I'm not surprised. Th victim mentality was a huge part of the Mormon indoctrination I experienced as a child. You hear over and over again about how the Mormons were sooooo persecuted in the 1800s and how misunderstood thy have always been.
And the church has whitewashed its own history in race do much that beliefs like this are not hard to fathom.

Is it because race is in your genes but god is in your head?

Your race is dictated, but you chose your religion. Someone who chooses magic underpants and the tenants of a young, weird, made up cult-come-religion may not have the discriminating thought process we’d want in someone who wields so much power.

Of course, if the tenants he holds are from an ancient, weird, made up cult-come-religion, he’s our guy.

I'd vote for a white mormon but I'm still ironing out this irrational bias against republicans, hypocrites and bigots so this particular white mormon is so far a no go.

Good Morning Charles,
Clearly, you're channeling John Lennon (title of the post).

I take results of those kind of surveys with a grain of salt. If correct, I'm unsure as to why they would feel that way. Obviously, they were not persecuted the way African-Americans were. They were largely a separatist cult prior to the end of the 19th century (they settled in Deseret now Utah, their equivalent Promised Land). Now, they are quite mainstream and pretty much reside in every state. Mormons have been elected at the Senate level and have governed a few states. So, I don't see any reason for their paranoia if it is indeed true.

@16 Obama is a devout Christian, and he hasn't given us any reason to doubt that he's not a devout Christian, yet you still openly and vocally support him, Vince.

It's harder for Americans to vote for a Mormon, period. Whether or not Mormons see themselves as "Christian", no one else does, and while we were able to elect a black Christian with an Islamic-sounding name in 2008, he's still a Christian.

Outside of our atheist bubble, this stuff really matters to people.

I have a slew of Mormon relatives residing in a very Mormon area just north of "the place".

They're sqauwking like stuck pigs lately. They love the war on Christmas stuff, and they are fully outfitted for the war on Christianity. They're all crazier 'n a rabid racoon, and armed to the teeth, for sure. If there's a brownshirt vein in the US itching for some cultural cleansing, this could very well assay out.

Sure, store security officers follow Mormon teenagers around every time they walk into a shopping mall. Women run to the other side of the street if they see a Mormon walking towards them. Cabs refuse to pick them up on the street. They are 90% more likely to be incarcerated for minor crimes. Poor Mormons.

#25 say's it all.

My family is Mormon. In fact I'm directly related to some of the biggest old time Mo's in the biz. Though my immediate family is is considered Jack Mormon. We are non-practicing. Actually we are heathens entirely. But I digress.

All this crying discrimination would be hilarious if it wasn't a deeply held belief among Mormons. They really do believe it. It's a regular theme. Like the war on Christmas.

This even though Mormons tend to be higher educated than the average with 6 in 10 going to college. And they are more likely to be more "upper middle class" than average - with 38% earning between $50 and 100K per year.

Compare that to black people in America. Yeah. Us poor Mormons are really getting the shaft. What with our longer life expectancies, higher educations, stable families, and better incomes. Why won't somebody think of us!

Let me lay some more Mo facts on you all:

They literally do enclave them selves (for fuck sake they tried to succeed a couple times) in a huge well kept graffiti free compound called Utah. Nearly 15% of ALL Mormons live in Utah - who make up nearly 60% of that states population

It is no longer the US religion though. Over half of all Mormons don't even live in the US - though less than 3% of all Mormons in the US are black. So they do go out into the world. And they do help people in need in the third world countries where nobody else gives a shit. But they insist on bringing their culture with them and doing a pretty hard sell.

Anyway. It is a different religion than the other Abrahamic faiths in several important ways. Most importantly is that it's genesis occurred with in a reliable recent historical record. And most of it's fundamental tenants are thus provably bullshit. And this fact leaves most Mormons in a constant state of defensive cognitive dissonance - and unlike other religions - they are aware they are in this state. That's why they want - they NEED - a president.

i got evangelized by a mormon back in the mid 70's before blacks were allowed in the same heaven as white folks. he explained that we were allowed in heaven, but had to go to the one that pigs and chickens and good kittens and obedient dogs went to..
these children believed in separate , but unequal paradise - we couldn't pray our dead mommas and daddies until god told their new leader that we were okay. the old leader had to die before god could desegregate heaven..
but that was in the 70's. i guess now we're ok .
look ! that metro bus has black mormons on it !

"Most importantly is that it's genesis occurred with in a reliable recent historical record. And most of it's fundamental tenants are thus provably bullshit. ..."

So you have Proof that Joseph Smith did not see god?

And this Proof is more certain than the Proof that Jesus did not in fact, rise from the dead, which happened so long ago that you feel you must accept it as fact?

And this Proof is more certain than the Proof that Moses did not see god, which happened so long ago that you feel you must accept it as fact?

And thus god wanted Solomon to live polygamy but you haver Proof that god did not want Brigham Young to live polygamy?

Is that it?

riz - no, no, heaven is STILL segregated. You get your OWN planet. That's why they allowed the big change.

Actually back in the day they believed really good black people had the Mark of Cain removed. In other words you got turned white. Isn't that nice of them?

So in effect you were technically always allowed in the big warm Mormon eternal hug. See. No worries.

I have a hard time accepting people who cling to misogynistic faiths and religions as part of their cultural tradition. This is why I am unsuitable for any Diversity Commission. Michelle Obama doesn't wear a headscarf, so I can't see Obama as anywhere near Muslim, but I don't trust people who think the only way women can ascend in the afterlife is through a secret code word given by their husbands in a wedding ceremony. Religious history has always been adding and subtracting things to suit cultural and temporal whims -- when the Mormons dump the men-only Apostles and Elders thing I might like 'em more,.

@ 34, last summer I went to visit my great uncle for the last time (he was 92 and had cancer he wasn't treating) in Orem, where he lived with one of his daughters who had converted when she was quite young. I had to laugh at the fact that there were so many Mormon churches that they were sometimes literally across the street from one another.

We drove back to Denver via US 40, on a Sunday, and noted that the parking lots of the single churches every tiny town had was full to capacity. You obviously don't get to just go on Christmas Eve and Easter if you want to stay in good standing.

Romney wants to run as the candidate of the Official Party of Religious Bigots™ , and Mormons can't figure out why it's a tough sell? Southern Baptists don't believe Methodists are getting into heaven. People calling themselves "Latter Day Saints" (translation: heretics) can expect the Evangelicals to view them with the same suspicion normally reserved for Muslims and Wiccans.

You can't just tell fundamentalists your religion is based on an unauthorized sequel to the One True Text and expect them to nod and smile.

Wah. It's funny that the Mo's are whining about discrimination, because many of them are sure not nice to Gentiles. As a kid, I got to experience the shun-treatment; because I wasn't a Mo I was ignored by the teacher and left out of all the out-of-classroom activities like birthday parties because they were all held at the Ward house. But nothing was worse than a boring Sunday when absolutely NOTHING was open. Eventually one of the movie chains decided they would stay open despite the wrath of the LDS church. Once there was some vandalism done in our neighborhood and the bishop came to our house to accuse my brother and I of doing it - because none of his faithful would have EVER done something like that. He never came back to apologize when it was proven that several middle school boys in his ward had done the damage. Fucker.
Luckily I moved to another state mid-way through elementary school, but my friends who were still in Utah had nothing but horror stories about high school and how they couldn't get on sports teams (controlled by the Mo's), couldn't get into Student Council (the Mo's wouldn't vote for a non-Mo), and in one case a school dance was held at a ward house and Gentiles were told they were not allowed. Granted, this was the 70s and 80s, and in places like Salt Lake it isn't as bad as it once was, but in some of those small towns, good luck getting help/service or even have people to talk to if you don't belong to the one and only church in town. All the new neighborhoods that are built are all built with a brand new church - front and center - so it cannot be missed by those who move in. It's almost like a watchtower, reminding the sheepies that they're being observed...constantly.

In the 19th century, the Mormons had what historian Ken Verdoia refers to as "isolated Christian socialism." After the Manifesto renouncing plural marriage in 1890, and the shift away from socialism to other forms of economic innovation, the Mormons began to aspire to a more mainstream position in the United States.
