Orange Juice Facts

Posted by on Tue, Jan 10, 2012 at 8:45 AM

WSJ:

In a letter dated Jan. 9 to the Juice Products Association, an industry group, the FDA said a juice company reported "low levels" of carbendazim, a fungicide, in its and its competitors products

The FDA said the fungicide was used on the 2011 orange crop in Brazil, the world's largest grower of oranges and the biggest producer of orange juice.

Florida oranges produce about three-quarters of U.S. orange-juice concentrate supplies, and imports cover the rest. About 75% of those imports come from Brazil.

Knowledge is power.

Knowledge may be power, but you haven't provided any. What you've pinched off is a factoid, and a measly little bolus it is.

Despite the constant barrage of shock headlines about dangerous killer food from Brazil, Mexico, and China, imported food is really no more likely to be defective, adulterated, or harmful than domestic food. The state of the industrial food industry in this country isn't too great, either. There are thousands upon thousands of places where your precious kibble is heaped on greasy concrete floors, etc. Your cattle routinely spend half their lives up to their bellies in excrement.

The acute oral LD50 of carbendazim for rats is >15000 mg/kg and >2500 mg/kg for dogs.

You would have to put away a LOT of orange juice before carbendazim would be a concern. In fact you would likely die from methanol poisoning first (yes, there is some in OJ). Though, in reality, the acid would fuck you up pretty bad before either of those things got to you.

Sadly I can't find a study that tested the LD50 of straight OJ :(
