As a Devotee of Fnarf, MacCrocodile, and Catalina Vel-Duray...

...the new Disqus data confirming that pseudonymous commenters are the best and most productive members of online communities doesn't surprise me.

(Exceptions granted for Slog's one or two pseudonym-using assholes.)

Thank you, Metafilter.

Hm, "Quality Signals by Identity" cites 61% positive for those using synonyms, and only 51% for those using their real names, but the bars in the graphs appear to be identical in terms of the overall percentages - so, either the stats are off or the graphic is whacked.

This is why it's often weirdly disorienting when people change their profile pics. All of the accumulated micro-impressions from your comments are stored in that one little graphic, and the brain struggles to re-map them. Occasionally people pick a winner—gloomy gus's is so perfect for him I can't even remember what it was before—but for the most part, fuses are blown. So choose wisely!

And I'm surprised at how often I grieve when a favorite commenter pulls back or disappears altogether. You wonder what happened, if everything's all right. I imagine it's how pets feel when one of your menagerie makes that final trip to the vet and the others spend weeks looking in favorite places and making plaintive inquiries—no explanation can be given. Sometimes I delve into the archives to refresh my memory.

I would like to take this opportunity to say thanks to Slog, staff and commenters (past and present) alike. You make much more enjoyable what is, for the time being, a fairly isolated existence.

I do have to dissent from the majority vis-a-vis Canuck, though. She seemed like a lovely human being, but it always seemed to me that she was like a bit, wet, hairy dog that showed up at a dinner party and shook herself dry while the guests ate fois gras and gently patted her on the head. I understand this is a minority opinion, though.

And hey, that's a hell of a lot better than Will, the dog who shows up, jumps onto the dinner table, takes a big crap and refuses to leave, even when the guests prod him with their tiny little fois gras forks.

@60, no, it's "whomever actually takes a look at Will's Twitter feed loses".

Jesus Christ. The last man in the world still talking about LOLcats (which he misspells). And this gem: "Salt Lake City is the city with the largest gay population" (which is not remotely true, nor is it what the article he links to says, but you knew that). Hilariously it was directed to @TheNewsChick, a KIRO radio news person that he appears to have a crush on. I'm sure she's THRILLED TO PIECES. But then, no, he'll just tweet or retweet anything to any woman, it's part of his lovemaking strategy.

But at least we now know what those TOP SECRET SOURCES are that he keeps referring to -- it's KIRO news radio.

He also doubles down on his bold prediction that Romney will be out of the campaign after SC, and even goes further -- "Will Mittens suspend his campaign if he fails the 20 point lead he's supposed to get in NH?" This stuff is like gold, I tell you.

10,000 tweets he's made. It makes his Slogging look almost sane. Such a busy little shit-for-brains.

@74 actually, Ellen and I did a few round robin posts a while back, where do you think the Costco chicken meme came from? The fact that you think the world is highly stratified is your problem. Some people connect to a lot of varied people in many places, it's how the world works.

That you can't understand it is sad, really. Also showing you lack a sense of humor and take things way too seriously.

@79, let me get this straight: you had a Costco chicken meme with Ellen Barkin.

You really start to spin out of control when you're pushed, don't you?

Here's a tip: Ellen Barkin has never discussed Costco chicken with you. She tweeted something about Costco chicken three times, and you were not involved in any of those three times. You have tweeted her but she has never tweeted you, ever ever ever. Ellen Barkin has no idea you even exist. You're just a name whizzing past her screen.

And, of course, if she did she'd run screaming, because you give women the creeps. Fact.

Also: you don't know what "meme" means. A random tweet is not a meme.

Twitter is perfect for you, Will, because it allows you the illusion that you're having a conversation with these people without them having to participate at all. You're not "connecting with a lot of varied people", you're talking to yourself.

It's beautiful in a way. Bonkers, and stupider than a leaking cup of santorum, but almost touching. You really believe it. You're like a guy who tears pictures out of magazines and pins them to the wall and talks to them all day long.

@16: "I don't use my real name on Facebook either."

G+ blocked my account for using initials as my "name" and now I need to enter my "real" name. I need to find some replacement name that I won't have to show photo ID to prove :(

That's exactly why I'll never use G+. Technically, you're supposed to use your real name on Facebook too, but they're much more lax about it.

My real name has an incredibly tiny internet footprint. I like it that way.

What if my pseudonym contains my real name?

Ah, never mind. I've never had devotees; I'm not sure I'd even know what to do with one.

MacCroc: That WAS a fine comment on your part. Goody Hawthorne! Hee! I'm honored you recall my approbation.

@102: Why? Why must you wound me so Undead Ayn Rand? I have always used my real name here! This from one of my favorite posters no less!

Sad Lissa is sad.

@110: For what it's worth, I've always liked you. Of course, as far as Slog goes, I'm kind of like that weird kid who sits just close enough to the cool kids to hear their conversations, contributing occasionally even though nobody ever seems to respond.

@111: Any one who likes cheese enough to use it as part of their screen name is A-Ok in my book. And, may I say, thems is some abs. Must be the cheese!
