Jay Inslee Supports Washington's Proposed Reproductive Parity Act. Does Rob McKenna?

Posted by on Mon, Jan 9, 2012 at 10:24 AM

Other than saying he doesn't want to see another all-cuts budget, Jay Inslee, the Democratic candidate for governor, hasn't had made any clear policy statements regarding what's about to go down in Olympia this session.

Until now.

In what strikes me as his first real entry into the politics of the legislative session that starts today, Inslee is throwing his support behind Representative Eileen Cody's Reproductive Parity Act.

Smart, especially given that Inslee needs to keep finding ways to excite his (pro-choice) base in King County, where a huge percentage of voters keep telling pollsters that they think of Republican Rob McKenna as their guy.

"The Reproductive Parity Act will provide a legal guarantee that all women have access to a full range of reproductive health services as the health care exchanges are established," Inslee said in a statement released last night. "This is a matter of reaffirming our commitment to preserving choice for Washington women and ensuring Washington remains a state where all women are ensured full control of their family planning and health care. It's important we have a governor who will be willing to stand up for women's health, and not allow politics or ideology to take precedence over common sense and science."

McKenna spokesman Dan Styman doesn't know whether his boss supports the Reproductive Parity Act. "I haven't asked him," Sytman said, referring me over to McKenna's campaign. When I called the McKenna campaign to ask the same question, I was told they are familiar with the bill and that someone will get back to me later. I'll post when / if I hear more from McKenna.

So, still nothing on ending the ever increasing budget holes from the Tax Giveaways to Billionaires and Corporations, huh?

French national health insurance picks up 100% of the tab for abortions for minors who have not obtained the consent of at least one parent. (In other cases, it would usually only cover 70%.) Over here, in contrast, the Obama administration is afraid to let girls under 17 get the morning-after pill (Plan B) without jumping through hoops. France may be nearly 90% Catholic, but they take secular government and the right to health care without regard to religiously based moral objections a lot more seriously than we do.
