Overheard in the Office: Who's on Top?

Posted by on Fri, Jan 6, 2012 at 5:25 PM

Walking through the newsroom just now, I heard Goldy saying to Eli, "Who's on top, you or Joni?"

He was referring to a press release we just got from Washington State Democrats referring to "Washington State's top political pundits" Joni Balter (of the Seattle Times) and Eli Sanders (of The Stranger). The entire press release is after the jump.

On to more important matters: Help us settle this newsroom debate.

“He’s the One Person Who's Not Too Thrilled”
Top WA State Pundits on Rob McKenna and the Fight for Marriage Equality

Seattle – Washington State’s top political pundits think that Rob McKenna is the “one person who’s not too thrilled” that marriage equality will be a dominating political issue in the run-up to the 2012 election.

During an appearance on KUOW, Seattle Times top political columnist Joni Balter and Stranger associate editor Eli Sanders analyzed the political implication of Gov. Gregoire’s recent advocacy for marriage equality and its likely place on the November ballot. Both agree – the issue is a winning one Democratic candidate Jay Inslee and losing one for Republican Rob McKenna, especially in progressive leaning and vote heavy King County.

In June, six months prior to Gregoire’s announcement, Jay Inslee declared his full support for marriage equality for same-sex partners. Rob McKenna opposes these rights, and has even equated same-sex marriage with polygamy and incest.

Top pundit Eli Sanders thinks if an initiative is polling at 48% approve and 40% reject, then it's not going to pass because it has to poll above 50% to pass. That's really all you need to know.
