The Tully's Coffee on Rainier and Genesee is no more.
To be honest, this part of South Seattle, which is exactly between the shopping center that's anchored by the massive Safeway and Columbia City, never really "improved" or was dramatically transformed by the booming 00s. Boss is still the boss of this town.
Boss appears to be a shoddily propped up front for some kind of illegal business.
But I highly recommend drinking there. You have definitely left this country when you step inside. Even more so than when you enter Rainier Valley itself.
The hope is that the Jumbo will eventually make way for transit oriented development. Also the land owned by Dairy Gold is worth a mint. So maybe in the near future that strip will be better incorporated into the Rainier business district.
The Genesse neighborhood has a weird vibe. I think it's because peoples allegiance gravitates to either Mt. Baker to the north or Columbia City to the south. Genessee itself has been emotionally abandoned by it's inhabitants. Or something.

That building looks like a false front, like when Safeway or Walgreens "builds out to the sidewalk" to meet Seattle's urban guidelines but it's really just a fake wall of windows with a blank wall immediately behind it. This is the kind of architecture that kills cities.
