Leni Riefenstahl and the Fourth Council of Constantinople Hold Secrets of Art Today

Nufer.

Tonight, at the Frye Art Museum, I'm going to moderate a conversation between two conceptual poets: Doug Nufer of Seattle, and Vanessa Place, up from Los Angeles. I will attempt to moderate as immoderately as possible, and I imagine, knowing what I know about them, that they will speak in tongues.

Doug Nufer is a park ranger, hula hooper, and haunter of Emerald Downs race track.

Sontag-Place.
  • Sontag-Place.
Vanessa Place is Susan Sontag, an attorney defending indigent sex offenders, and a champion of the idea that art is failure and great art the greatest failure. (She also believes that Leni Riefenstahl's reclassification after her politics was revealed—she was no longer considered an artist—is an overlooked founding myth of contemporary art; and so is the Fourth Council of Constantinople, which opened in the year 869, and during which images were granted holy status equal to the status of the Word. No such similar thing happened in Islam, and it's affected the whole history of image-making in the West, she argues convincingly.)

I don't know exactly what's going to happen. But it starts at 6:30, and I don't think you should miss this.

No shit. Maybe because Muslims consider representational art idolatry? Were Muslims going to consider their non-representational art equal to the Word? Ha!
