What Element of the Universe Does Stephen Hawking Find Most Baffling?

Posted by on Wed, Jan 4, 2012 at 12:52 PM

Women.

In an interview to mark his 70th birthday this weekend, Stephen Hawking, the former Lucasian professor of mathematics at Cambridge University, admitted he spent most of the day thinking about women. "They are," he said "a complete mystery."

Well given that he's been married twice, it shouldnt be too confusing. By now he should have a stable theory, or better understanding than he did before.

Women? Really?

Then where did physicists get their reputation for being so suave with the ladies?

Did anyone ever tell him women are people? We act a lot like, you know, people.

What element of the universe do I find least baffling? Stephen Hawking.

That is fucking sad. "Women are a mystery" puts us firmly in the "Other" box (also, what @4 said).

In this way Hawking and Feynman differ.

I say the Thermos is the most baffling thing in the universe. If you put hot liquid in it, it keeps it hot; if you put cold liquid in it, it keeps it cold. How does it know?

@4 A lot like, but not exactly. That's the baffling part. Scientists want certainty.

This is not the first time I have heard this from a 70 year old man. There's something to be said for knowing your limitations.

The "mystery" of women is really the mystery of the male self. It's ourselves and our own reactions we men do not understand, not women.

To quote Kingsley Amis, "Why did I like women's breasts so much? I was clear why I liked them, thanks, but why did I like them so much?"

Fnarf, you make me think of the song 'Confessions' by Tim Minchin.

I almost expected his next words to be "It is still puzzling to me how exactly they manage to achieve flight through the use of a broomstick"

If someone programmed Hawking's little voice box thingy to say offensive shit, how would we know?

Half the population gets that joke. The other half gets mad at us for getting it, so we pretend to be offended and then retell it only when they're not around.

Hm, it would seem that his robotic voice box doesn't really translate humor very well.

How on Earth do you even arrive at this?

If Steven Hawkins is thinking about it, I am going to think way more about it than I already do, which is a pretty fair amount, but not as much as him.

What he doesn't understand is people that use the part of their brains for social interaction that he uses for physics. He singles out women because that's who he is attracted to. He has never had to apply social intelligence to an intimate relationship with a man.
