Jay Inslee: "Do Not Let Anyone Hornswoggle You" on Health Care Reform

Jay Inslee: no hornswoggling allowed.

  • Jay Inslee: no "hornswoggling" allowed.

Speaking before lawmakers, lobbyists, and health care industry stakeholders at today's "State of Reform" conference in Seatac, Rep. Jay Inslee was blunt in his assessment of Rob McKenna's claims that popular provisions regarding pre-existing conditions, the medicare donut hole, and adult children buying coverage on their parents' policies, could survive a US Supreme Court dismantling of the individual mandate.

"Do not let anyone hornswoggle you into that falsehood," Inslee warned the crowd during his lunchtime keynote address. McKenna infamously joined a number of other Republican attorneys general in challenging the constitutionality of the mandate, yet refuses to acknowledge that his suit threatens the entire Affordable Care Act (ACA). But McKenna called his opponent's bluff: "You cannot have your cake and eat it too when it comes to health care reform."

And that's about as colorful as Inslee got in a speech that was heavy on the policy-wonky stuff, befitting a roomful of policy wonks, many of them representing health care industry players who stand to have their ox gored a bit should the ACA be fully implemented.

Later today McKenna will address the conference at the closing the keynote, though apparently via video conference—a change of plans I've been assured has absolutely nothing to do with me being in attendance.

"But McKenna called his opponent's bluff: "You cannot have your cake and eat it too when it comes to health care reform.""

...or do you mean that Inslee called his opponent's bluff?

The term "stakeholder" is totally meaningless. Don't use it.

Camping. Now that's intense! (groan)

In all seriousness, I would like to see Jay Inslee debate anyone. The last time he did, He agreed to one debate in the 2010 election, and that was in a tiny log meeting hall out in the woods behind some small Bainbridge Island town, his hometown. Interestingly, though, the cozy meeting hall was packed and ready for his arrival, but it was packed with a majority of conservatives from the mainland who ferried over just to be at that debate.

And James Watkins won the debate handily, while Jay Inslee avoided answering direct simple questions until the crowd at one point was shouting at him in unison, "Answer the question!" - he never did.

Jay Inslee tends to speak in clichés when he's addressing the public in forums like that, and Dori Monson had a lot of fun with and interview Jay Inslee gave in mid-March 2012, where Dori rang a bell every time Jay Inslee said something that was a cliché. I'm telling you it was funny as could be because that Bell kept on ringing after every phrase that came out of Cliché J Inslee's mouth. It would have been funnier if this man were not pretending to be a leader.

Anyone but Inslee in 2012. Do not elect him as the governor to take the place of Christine ( or is it Chris?) Gregoire, The current but retiring governor of Washington State.

If you are conflicted by either of the above politicians, Jay Inslee and Rob McKenna, then give Shahram Hadian a closer look. I believe Mr. Hadian has what it takes, plus more energy and enthusiasm than the next two people I know. I believe Shahram Hadian is a true conservative, which makes him the front runner in my book.
