Olympia Gregoire's Gay Marriage Announcement

UPDATE: The governor says she supports gay marriage, and will introduce the bill to legalize it in Washington State herself. "It is time, it's the right thing to do, and I will introduce the bill to make it happen," Gregoire said.
As for whether there are enough votes in the state senate to get a bill passed—State Senator Ed Murray admitted at today's press conference that currently there are not—Gregoire said: "We got a very important vote today. We'll get the rest that we need to get it to my desk."

She seems on the verge of tears. She is usually so matter-of-fact, so polished, but you can tell she is really passionate about marriage equality.

Woo gay marriage! Can we have some handicapping now of potential supporters in the state senate and house to see what the odds are of this passing? That'd be great.

While I'm glad she's doing this I don't find her timing (on her way out the door) to be all that impressive. So... thanks.

Nice to know that she's finally willing to take a stand after years of weak stances and waffling on everything else that's important.
Look...taken for what it is, this announcement is a good thing. We need elected leaders to publicly support marriage equality. Just would've been nice to see some of this passion before she had nothing left to lose.

That said, now that she has taken this step, the stance itself isn't as far out there for anyone who comes after her to take. So, while it may show less courage from Gregoire, it means it will require less bravery from anyone else.

Nice to see she's finally doing the right thing... now that she has nothing to lose by doing so. Way to take a stand, brave, brave governor.

Ugg, color me conflicted. I'm not a Washingtoner (Washingtonian?! Washingtonite?!), but my opinion of your governor has been colored negatively by your budget, tax, and occupy reporting. I just wish that it was possible to view this announcement as super hot good news and not as a consolation prize from a governor who won't fight for the 99%. All social movements including our LGBT movement need to be laser focused on income equality. Without incoming equality, nothing we achieve for ourselves will mean better lives for us or our families!

@11, while I can see you are truly zealous, you do realize that achieving marriage equality, in and of itself, means better lives for us and our families? And that it carries significant economic equality effects in and of itself?

I'm sure I don't need to tell you this, but New York State is not a hotbed of progressivism, and we has marriage equality now.
Be sure to remind your legislators that they can't let New York get away with this, that Washington should have beaten us and that they better hurry up so they're not beaten by even more states!

So, I wonder if my "everything-but-married" will convert itself or will I have to get "real-married in Washington"? most importantly, will I get another card? I love my Washington DP card. I like to use it for ID in other states, just to watch the persons face.
