Amazon to Publish James Franco's First Novel

Posted by on Wed, Jan 4, 2012 at 11:01 AM

I'm sure the fact that he's a hot celebrity has nothing to do with this.

James Franco, the actor-writer-producer-graduate student, has signed a publishing deal with Amazon's fledgling publishing house, the Observer reports.

It will be Franco's first novel, tentatively titled "Actors Anonymous," and said to be loosely based on his own life.

It's all about literary merit at Amazon.com.

Oh no, companies pairing up with celebrities, what is the world coming to, ah, help, no.

Better than a book by snookie or santorum. Chances are it will be garbage, but at least Franco seems somewhat serious about writing...

As 6 stated, he is an English doctoral student at Yale whilst Paul Constant is a hot dog-eating participant who could stand to make use of both an education and a treadmill. He fat.

This post reminds me of the time UCLA wanted Franco to give its commencement address, but some whiny-ass undergrad started a campaign against the invitation, claiming that he wasn't accomplished enough.

(Come to think of it, isn't that the same reason one of those Arizona schools refused to give Obama an honorary doctorate?)

It's all about literary merit at Amazon.com.

Unlike all those other publishing houses, who never, ever publish celebrity novels or memoirs, you mean? What a stupid, stupid remark.

Oh Paul! You're just so dang funny!

This post is satire right?

Can Paul name a publishing house that HASN'T published a celebrity memoir? So does Harper Collins, et al, also lack literary merit? You have to wonder what Amazon could do that Paul wouldn't criticize. Is its only chance for redemption to throw in the towel and close shop?

Also, what @5 said.

Anyone else think this has "The Hottest State" written all over it?

Newsflash: publishers want to make money. Duh.

That said, this has the possibility of being somewhat better than the legion of other celebrity memoirs. Franco is at least halfway interesting, and is likely to actually write it himself rather than using a ghost writer.

I confess I have a longstanding Franco crush, and am likely to buy this unless it is complete dreck.

Apple will be holding a big press event to focus on publishing and the iBook Store very soon. There're not only killing independent books stores, but record stores as well. Apple is a much bigger threat to local businesses than Amazon.

I've said it before: James Franco, please stop saying and doing things.

Hey, I think I solved the mystery of why all the bookstores and publishing houses that Paul Constant respects shut their doors. Want to hear my theory?

I don't like Franco, and a book about actors, eugh - but I thought this short story of his was pretty good: http://www.esquire.com/fiction/james-fra…

I am shocked and outraged that a celebrity would get a book deal. Amazon is truly destroying the publishing industry, and possibly the world. How dare they break from convention like this?
