That is pretty amazing. What a great take on her own work...

Pretty cool. Now we need a behavioural mathmetician to explain the apparently-but-not-really random patterns that developed.

Or, maybe we should just appreciate it as is.

How did those kids reach the ceiling?

With dreams, anything is possible!

Or they pointed to where they wanted the sticker and their parents put it there or gave them a lift.

let me get this straight: they gave kids stickers, AND THEY USED THEM? who could have anticipated this result?

Looks just like my house once people started giving sticker books to my kids. One sticker in a hundred ends up inside the actual book. The rest are on furniture, carpet, rugs, bedding, reading books, toothbruches, hard floors... those things are obnoxious when stuck to the bottom of your foot (my slippers have stickers all over the bottom), but impossible to get off my hard floors.

But this exhibit is great.

They should give individual colors to seperate groups and tell them which things they can decorate. Then, at least, it wouldn't look like a rainbow puked.

Lovely. It makes you wonder what they were seeing or imagining. Did they think some items should be a specific color? Did they feel compelled to eliminate the white? Maybe as a parent of a synesthese, whose hearing impaired, I wonder to much, though.

And, Allyn @6, I miss those days, only my washer remains so decorated.

@1: Exactly! Yayoi Kusama is a fascinating artist. Since the '60s, she's been using polka dots in her work, which gives it a really familiar and really innocent quality (like here). But it is also an open secret in the art world that she struggles pretty mightily with mental illness. Her works are obsessive. This piece, in many ways, is sweet and simple. But it also becomes kind of disgusting, like the gum wall at Pike Place Market. At least that's how I see it.

Thank you so much for posting this, Dan!

@10 Kim, I will cherish them. (And I'll stop cursing the stickers every time I have to peel one off my bare foot.)

Love this! I love it when modern art is, well, fun and interactive.

To go off of what @11 said: it's worth noting that Kusama isn't just some clever kid - she's in her eighties and has been making art for almost her whole life; she's one of those artists who isn't a household name outside of art circles (no pun intended), but among artsy types she's a very big deal - she's probably about as famous as an artist can get without crossing into more mainstream fame. I've been a big fan of hers for a while - it's nice to see that she still has some tricks up her sleeve...

I was at the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art a few weeks ago, and it is, without a doubt, one of the best modern art museums in the world. If you ever find yourself in Brisbane, don't miss it.
