Some of Rick Santorum's Best Friends Are Black

Posted by on Tue, Jan 3, 2012 at 11:51 AM

I was going to poke fun yesterday at Santorum's “I don’t want to make black people’s lives better" gaffe, but considering all the truly horrible things he's said and means, taking this one out of context just seemed superfluous.

"I don’t want to make black people’s lives better by giving them other people’s money,” Santorum told a gathering in Iowa, before continuing with his usual conservative-Republican gospel of self-sufficiency:

“I want to give them the opportunity to go out and earn their money and provide for themselves and their families,” he added. “The best way to do that is to get the manufacturing sector of the economy rolling.”

It's not that he doesn't want to make black people's lives better. He just doesn't want to do it via a welfare state. That, at least, is how I understood Santorum's poorly worded statement, and so fair and balanced that I am, I decided to not to hang him with it.

But then Santorum insisted on stepping in his own shit:

I don’t single out on any group of people, that’s one thing I don’t do,” the former Pennsylvania Senator explained to Hannity. “I don’t divide people by group and race and class."

Then, um, why did you single out black people?

“I condemn all forms of racism and there’s nobody who has done more as a Republican in the United States Senate to bring African-Americans into the party. Go ask J.C. Watts. Ask Michael Steele."

Really, Rick? The some-of-my-best-friends-are-black defense?

"I’ve worked with historically black colleges. I’ve done a ton of stuff. This is just someone trying to cause trouble."

Yeah... probably a black person.

(Sigh.)

He wants to help black people, just not with pesky things like education and opportunity to move up. Factory work is good enough for them, and since unions and safety regulations are bad it will be for minimum wage and poor safety standards.

Sometimes if you're not careful, you blow the dog whistle and everybody hears it.

Look, I hate Rick Santorum (gay, duh!). But I listened to the tape over and over, and I just don't think that's what he said. I think he started to say another word, and changed half way through, and it came out sounding like "black people". Watch the tape and make up your own mind. He certainly stumbles on whatever word it is he is trying to say. As much as I'd love to hang this millstone, it's not something I can take at face value after listening to him. You decide. http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/201…

Seriously...how could you not have heard him say "black people" when he said it very clearly and dared to try to offend the statement by adding the nonsense about factory jobs. It was a calculated move on his part to pander to a crowd that he thought would be receptive to such a racist comment. He would really hate our family as we are Black people, who happen to be educated and with great careers (I for one am CEO of a multi-million organization) and my husband and I have 4 of our 5 kids in college--oldest getting her law degree in addition to her Master's) and living in Mississippi of all places.....ooohhhh...how can that be.

Santorum, and people like him, need to educate themselves on a couple of facts 1) President Obama's mother was born in Kansas--the parent of a child born in the US is a US citizen regardless of where they were born (even though he was born in Hawaii) 2) Of all the people who are on welfare in the US about 70% are white and only about 10% are black 3) Reagan raised taxes about a dozen times, even though Cantor's press secretary was ignorant of the fact and finally 4) since most claim to be so "uber-religious"....little reminder that this thing called "judgment day" is calling and they all will becalled into account of their actions. Hint: easier, camel, eye of needle, rich man-enter heaven....need I say more.

Asked about the comment on Monday, Santorum said he hadn't seen the context of the quote, but noted that he had been talking about the movie, "'Waiting for Superman,' which was about black children."
"So I don't know of it was a response because I was talking after talking about that," Santorum said, according to NBC News' Andrew Rafferty.http://www.thegrio.com/politics/santorum-in-iowa-wont-make-black-peoples-lives-better-with-welfare.php
