Beauty and the Blades

Posted by on Tue, Jan 3, 2012 at 9:42 AM

KOMO:

Lauren Scruggs, a model and LOLO magazine fashion blogger, is slowly recovering from a plane accident over the weekend in which she lost her hand and suffered severe injuries after she accidentally walked into a spinning propeller.

Scruggs, who has also worked in the wardrobe department on Gossip Girl , was exiting a two-seater plane in McKinney, Texas, on Saturday after flying around Dallas to see Christmas lights when the accident occurred. The blades sliced the left side of her face and shoulder, and severed her left hand, which was later amputated following multiple reconstructive surgeries.

Walked into a spinning propeller? I must be missing some piece of information because I can't even imagine a very drunk person walking into an active, terribly noisy, obviously dangerous propeller.
'It was dark... we are thinking that Lauren came back to thank the pilot, and didn't see that the propeller was winding down.'
She also lost an eye! Meaning, she walked right into the blades. Are propellers totally silent when the engine is cut? I hope the assigned detective is on his/her toes.

I really hope they don't actually assign a detective to this idiocy and allow them a chance at solving an actual crime. Being completely unaware of your surroundings is not illegal..

Sad to say, this type of accident is not only not all that infrequent, but it tends to happen the vast majority of times to women, when does most unfortunately occur.

Evidently, people aren't aware that they plane they flew on was a propeller job, and think nothing of walking near the engines; not dissimilar to people who gallivant around the tops of waterfalls, then slip in to their deaths.

Usually the same people who can be depended upon to vote for anyone claiming to be a democrat, no matter who neocon their records are.

"Being completely unaware of your surroundings ..."

Is the chief indicator of low intelligence, like only absorbing one's "education" and "knowledge" from the chronic viewing of sports, TV entertainment, movies, music vids, and that sill corporate crapola people still seem intent upon claiming to be the "media" (WaPo, NewWhore Times, L.A. Times, etc.).

Charles, really. Give the girl a break before you imply that she's stupid for having accidentally walked into a propeller. She ripped off her damn hand and face.

Propeller planes (all planes, actually) are noisy. Imagine stepping out into a dark vortex of roaring engines and wind, with no familiarity of the boundaries of the propellers. Accidents happen. I think it was in poor taste to state "I can't even imagine a very drunk person walking into an active, terribly noisy, obviously dangerous propeller."

Have a heart.

Turboprop aircraft [http://images.travelpod.com/users/tipper…] this can happen very easily. I suspect that an airport, an engine, are loud enough to be perceived as ambient noise rather than point source; and if it was dark, easily near-invisible.

I'd say this is a textbook, [and horrible] accident, that Miss Scruggs will curse herself the rest of her life for.

The pilot will probably lose his license for not completely powering down the plane before disembarking passengers.

And be subject to a hell of a civil suit. Ultimately, this is the pilot's responsibility.

Also, if she was malnourished and hungry (which so, so many models are) she might not have had her wits about her.

What a horrible mishap.

Amanda Knox pushed her into the propeller. Duh.

"I must be missing some piece of information"

More details on the incident were floating about when it happened a month ago. Her parents were even on the morning news shows, etc.

This current article is just an update on the eye issue. Google if you really want to know more.

You know this actually happened over two weeks ago, right? That's like 10 years in internet time. Unless you have something new to say about it--and speculating on her sobriety doesn't count--probably best to just let it go.

I just flew in a turboprop over Christmas, and I can confirm that the planes are noisy as hell inside and out. You can't hear or see the propeller. In fact, that's how you can tell it's moving, because you can't see it. What seems odd to me is that they let the passengers out of the plane before the prop had stopped; on our SkyWest plane, it started to spin after we got on, and stopped before we were allowed off.

Ditto what Fnarf said, and I was on one to D.C. last June.

In the absence of a ground crew, the pilot is responsible for passenger safety. This was a serious fuck-up, and you can blame the passenger if you want, but someone was supposed to be looking out for her safety besides her.

Propellers aren't what is noisy, it's the engine. The propeller is actually pretty quiet and difficult to see when it's moving, especially in the dark.

I did not see this originally and refuse to go back for details to just add more horrible images to my limited brain cell storage area, but one item from this article caught my eye (sorry for that): It was a two-seater airplane, so just her and the pilot. To me, this puts even more pressure on the pilot to protect his only passenger. Tragic story.

Charles, I must have been missing some piece of information a couple months back when you watched your neighbors house get robbed in broad daylight and didn't even bother to call the police. You must have been a very drunk person that day.
