Park Ranger's Killer Reported to be Dead

Posted by on Mon, Jan 2, 2012 at 11:50 AM

It looks like he took his own life.

A man was found dead in Mount Rainier National Park this morning and it is believed to be the suspect in the shooting death of park ranger Margaret Anderson Sunday morning, according to law enforcement sources.

Sources say the body, believed to be that of Benjamin Colton Barnes, was found about 10:20 a.m...

UPDATE: It also looks like the mountain killed him:

The body of an Iraq war veteran suspected in the slaying of a Mount Rainier National Park ranger was believed to have been found in chest-deep snow on Monday, authorities said.

Actually it looks like nature took his life; he froze to death after wading into chest-deep snow while pursued by snowshoe-clad police.

Why is slog conspicuously ignoring the gang shooting in downtown Seattle on Saturday night that left 2 Gang Members Of Color with gunshot wounds?

Way too peaceful of a death, freezing away.

If black gangs shoot at each other in downtown Seattle, resulting in two Gang Members of Color shot, but Slog doesn't mention it, did it really happen?

@4, I think we should wait and find out more about this guy before we say he got a more peaceful death than he deserved. Who was he before he joined our armed forces? Who was he before he was sent overseas to risk his life for our politicians lies? I'm assuming this guy was mentally disturbed and didn't get help until another story emerges. We have a major mental health problem in this country, especially among our war vets.

the mountain and/or nature did not kill him. this was deliberate. there's no way he would have ever let anyone take him alive. so yes, vbh, i did call this and deserve credit.

@9 He didn't kill himself. KOMO TV reports that he didn't have any self-inflicted wounds and likely died of exposure. They found him wearing only jeans, a t-shirt and one shoe.

@11, I think you confirmed my theory that this guy was nuts!

@12 hard to say, at least from that...a common final stage symptom of hypothermia (from exposure) is feelings of both intense warmth and in some cases euphoria, which actually causes people dying from it to semi frequently disrobe even as their core temperature is dropping below what's need to sustain automatic nervous function, as they percieve themselves to be warm, sometimes overly so.

From what I have heard he was a 25U in the army. I've heard it described that he was a radio operator so that's the MOS I'm going with. Also unless he had gone to a school. He wouldn't receive much survival training. We're not looking at someone highly trained IMHO unless you're talking about more highly trained than your average civilian. I can't talk to the allegations of PTSD though, but it sounds like he had underlying issues before the military. I know a lot of people after deployment (including myself) that just wanted to leave the military.

@7: He was not a combat veteran. He was just another gun-crazy white trash fuckup who would've been an unemployed idiot without arms training if we hadn't been sucking white trash into the military in the wake of George W. Bush's war on Iraq.

No apologies for the worst America has to offer.

God bless Ranger Anderson and his poor motherless daughters.

Hmm...that's funny. The link to the Times never mentions him "taking his own life". Chuckie pulled that statement out of his ASS. I guess that's the other thing he does when he's not copying and pasting from books.
