Afghan Teen Tortured By Inlaws for Resisting Prostitution

Posted by on Mon, Jan 2, 2012 at 10:43 AM

There are laws in Afghanistan that are supposed to protect women from brutalities like rape, prostitution, forced marriage, and "the trading of women to settle disputes." But the laws are sporadically (and sometimes sadistically) enforced, the lawbreakers are rarely punished, and the end result is a society where things like this are common:

A 15-year-old Afghan girl who was severely tortured for months by her in-laws to force her into prostitution will be sent to India for medical treatment, an Afghan official has said.

...According to officials in north-eastern Baghlan province, Gul's in-laws kept her in a basement for six months, ripped her fingernails out, tortured her with hot irons and broke her fingers. Police freed her last week after her uncle tipped them off.

"There are laws in Afghanistan that are supposed to protect women ...."

You sure about that??? Portions I've read regarding their constitution (written during American occupation) incorporate Sharia Law, and passages which read like they were written by both Monsanto and energy corporations?

A related Frontline piece tomorrow evening...

In Opium Brides, airing Tuesday, January 3, 2012, at 10 p.m. ET on PBS (check local listings), award-winning Afghan journalist Najibullah Quraishi takes viewers deep into the remote Afghan countryside to reveal the deadly bargain local farm families have been forced to make with drug smugglers in order to survive.

Afghanistan has, for it's entire history, been a miserable fucked up shithole. We should have just carpet bombed the entire country, and then nuked it from orbit just be sure.

@8, sonder:

You might want to review a bit of history:

http://www.globalresearch.ca/articles/BR…

According to this 1998 interview with Zbigniew Brzezinski, the CIA's intervention in Afghanistan preceded the 1979 Soviet invasion. This decision of the Carter Administration in 1979 to intervene and destabilise Afghanistan is the root cause of Afghanistan's destruction as a nation.

The former director of the CIA, Robert Gates, stated in his memoirs ["From the Shadows"], that American intelligence services began to aid the Mujahadeen in Afghanistan 6 months before the Soviet intervention.

Once upon a time, a good deal of Afghanistan was secular, with women ejoying far more rights than AFTER US meddling in their internal affairs, causing untold death and destruction.

Sound familiar????
