Seahawks Get What They Deserve

Posted by on Sun, Jan 1, 2012 at 5:24 PM

Last year the Seattle Seahawks finished the season with a losing 7-9 record, yet still made the playoffs atop a pathetic Western division. They even managed to win a playoff game against the defending Super Bowl champions. This year, no such luck, with the same 7-9 record landing the Seahawks in third place, six wins behind first place San Francisco.

On the bright side, the Seahawks will benefit from a draft position commensurate with their middling record.

Meanwhile, the redistricting commission is still not done, 5:28 to go.

When they can afford to pay for it.

Until then, go read Grantaland, just like the rest of us sports-journalism snobs.

What is wrong with the Times and local TV, they seem decent, but yes Grantland is good.

And Goldy we could always trade up.

The best place to read about the Mariners in my opinion is here: http://www.lookoutlanding.com/

Often very funny.

The piece in last week's Weakly about how pro footballers mis-spend their millions was interesting, as far as that goes for the generic pap churned out by VIM these days.

It does beg the question, what are we paying those chumps so much for, if they are mostly gonna blow it all on coke and sports cars?

Pro sports can kiss my fat ass. I know a lot of y'all can't get enough of it, even the pathetic Seachickens, but good goddamn- if most pro players are gonna piss their earnings away and declare bankruptcy after retiring, do you wanna keep supporting that system?

@ 7, the phrase is "raises the question," not "begs." That's something else entirely. If you're going to be some snob who turns his nose up at sports, then at the very least you should demonstrate an actual superiority to it, not a faux one. How the hell do you spend YOUR money, anyway?

Denver guy: Yah, I always get that 'begs the question' thing wrong.

Having gotten that out of the way, I am not 'superior to sports'. I truly wonder how, if sports fans have seen the shocking waste of money that current pro sports salaries create, do sports fans keep tolerating it?

I guess since I am not a sports fan it just appears utterly ridiculous. Do sports fans just turn a blind eye to it? Do they care? Are they bothered by it at all?

I mean really: Here's a system that rewards guys by giving them ginormous gobs of cash while wrecking their bodies while fostering an attitude of spend-it-as-fast-as-you-make it, fuck the future. Then when the future comes they're bankrupt, broke, have shit-tons of health issues (and medical bills), no real-world skills for dealing with that... and... sports fans are shoveling more money into the system, ensuring it continues.

Do sports fans feel any guilt at all?

And just so you know, I fully realize there are other systems that behave similarly. Hollywood and the outlandish salaries paid to leading actors, for one.

Finally, I blow every cent I make on rotgut booze, hookers, and russian pornography. Please don't tell The Future Mrs. Dr. Awesome, as it is my dirty little secret. But it is not germane to this conversation, so why do you ask?
