The Safest Year to Fly?

Posted by on Fri, Dec 30, 2011 at 10:08 AM

But the year is not over? We really should wait for the first day of 2012 to post things like this...

2011 has been the safest year ever to fly, with one passenger death per 7.1 million air travelers.
We live in the universe. Anything can happen in this universe.

Charles,
What I found fascinating as I recall from the same piece (?) was that it was more dangerous to be taxiing on the tarmac than flying itself. Evidently, more accidents/incidents occured there than in the air.

I find that it's far more dangerous (and costly per mile) for me to get from Kent East Hill to SeaTac than it is to go from SeaTac to Denver.

While Southwest can take me 1200 miles for about $250 or less, to go the nine miles from my house to the terminal, cabs cost $35 each way, as does Shuttle Express, and parking is an egregious $15 a day. I can use public transit but only after 5am and before 9pm, so forget about red eye specials...and I wouldn't want to be at the International Blvd. stop southbound after dark anyway!

Jebus! I used to live on the East Hill of Kent. Even though I was ensconced in one of the "nicer" neighborhoods, all I remember were tweekers and the juvenile delinquents racing their primer and bullshit rice burners on every street. I moved back to Seattle where it is safer in every respect.
