Turns Out, Kucinich Doesn't Love Washington, After All

Posted by on Thu, Dec 29, 2011 at 10:31 AM

Bad news, Washington elf-lovers! Dennis Kucinich is staying in Ohio:

After months of agonizing that included with a flirtation with a bid in Washington, Kucinich announced Wednesday he had filed to run for reelection in Ohio’s new 9th District — a decision that sets him up for a primary with his longtime Democratic colleague, Rep. Marcy Kaptur.

Eli has been covering the Kucinich flirtation for a while now, and Kucinich has been actively wooing Washington state since the summer. It'll be interesting to see if Kaptur makes his visits to the Northwest into a campaign issue—she's got some pretty convincing evidence implying that Kucinich cares more about being in Congress than about who's sending him there.

Good. He was too rich for my blood, I can't imagine voting for anybody who isn't a bland centrist.

That's OK. Our local politicians kick ass!

We've got tons of great leaders on the bench ready to represent the fuck out of that district. I bet we get somebody with the statesmanship of Frank Chopp and the vision of Dow Consadine. And the character of Tim Eyman.

Washington is blessed.

Don't suppose the redistricting map that Goldy posted yesterday had anything to do with the elf's decision.

This is news???

I've known for weeks that he'd been thrown in with Kaptur, and that he was going to run against -- no, strike that -- lose to her in the Ohio primary. At least since the horribly pro-Republican map of Congressional Districts was approved.

BTW, Kucinich actually shilled for that atrocity of a redistricting, working to convince Democratic state legislators to vote in favor of what will likely be a 12-4 delegation. Somehow, he thinks that having the new CD be basically half his old constituents and half Kaptur's will help his chances.

If he only had a vastly over-inflated view of his popularity and political prowess, he might have a prayer. But that socially-conservative, working-class Catholic district would much rather back an abortion opponent who sticks by her guns than the suddenly-pro-choice-when-he-ran-for-prez Kucinich. And they'd also prefer a true proponent of working-class economic values over whatever it is that loony Dennis espouses.
