One More Thing to Worry About

Posted by on Thu, Dec 29, 2011 at 8:40 AM

MicrobeWorld:

Plumbing systems may be a common source of human infections, say researchers studying the prevalence of the fungus Fusarium in bathroom sink drains.

“With about two-thirds of sinks found to harbor Fusarium, it’s clear that those buildings’ inhabitants are exposed to these fungi on a regular basis,” says lead investigator Dylan Short, who recently completed his doctorate in plant pathology. “This strongly supports the hypothesis that plumbing-surface biofilms serve as reservoirs for human pathogenic fusaria.”

And to think we were just celebrating the birth of a man whose father happens to be the creator of this universe—a universe that has nasty things like this toxic, sink-residing fungus.

Just think of the woman wearing a ring that's been lodged in a toilet for 30+ years...

One more thing for YOU to worry about, maybe. Lord, what a fussbudget. Just imagine the infectious things you'd encounter if we didn't have modern plumbing.

And somehow our species has managed to survive, even thrive, long before sinks or the crap that grew in them were a concern.

Get over it and build an immunity!

@5: Well, if it's GROWING...and it doesn't appear to be an evaporite mineral deposit...

I hate these articles. That kind of fungus is usually only a concern to people who are immune compromised, and really just keeping your home clean should be enough to keep the problem at bay. When was the last time you stuck your nose in your drain and inhaled deeply?

@8,

I figured you were sticking something in your drains, Fnarf. I didn't realize it was your nose.
