Jon Huntsman's Anti-Ron Paul TV Ad Is Pretty Damning

Posted by on Thu, Dec 29, 2011 at 12:31 PM

Moderate Republicans—and, yes, they do exist in New Hampshire—might just think twice about voting for Ron Paul after watching this ad:

That's a pretty solid case, for one minute's worth of video.

I'm baffled by Andrew Sullivan's support for this guy. I know he took it back, but still.

Walking away from a televised interview is never a good look.

@2: A lot of smart people are enamored by Ron Paul's better positions -- e.g. Iraq war was a mistake, end the drug war, oppose NDAA/SOPA, etc. And because those positions are so exciting, yet so rare among the political elite, there's a temptation not to look any deeper, lest you find something you might dislike.

It's basically a political crush. People have been so in love with Paul's good side that they've gleefully ignored the possibility that he might have faults.

To which New Hampshire Republicans respond, "Who's Jon Huntsman?"

The only two choices on the whole newsletters thing is that either Paul is a liar, which I think is the most likely explanation or he is so colossally irresponsible as to allow his name to be used for years to spread racist and other nonsense without noticing. Neither makes him the sort of person who should be president.

@2: When did he take it back? I must have missed that. Looks like on his blog he's still defending Paul pretty vehemently.

Here's the best response so far from the Paul camp: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mobileweb/…

@5 wins! It is a great ad against Paul, but most of the people who watch this ad are not going to pay any attention to the sponsor. This ad may move Mitt's numbers, but I doubt it will help Huntsman.

Huntsman's logo makes him look like a hotel chain or an upstart fashion label.

@7 I saw something on the Daily Beast saying he was "reconsidering" his support for Paul.

@4 I like Ron Paul. I think he plays an important role in our political discourse by posing provocative questions to mainstream politicians. On the other hand it has always been abundantly clear that he's insane.

I really hope that after Obama wins again in 2012 that he offers a new cabinet position to Huntsman. He's a pretty good dude.

Right, he's the mirror they always manage to find themselves and choice of beliefs in.

@11: Bernie Sanders says similar things, but seeing as he's sensible and believes those things for the right reasons (and is not a Republican) he gets pretty much zero screen time and invitations to the chat programs. Not that the beltway "insiders" and pundits are worth a heap of dung, of course.

@13: Bernie Sanders does not say "similar" things.

@15: They are vastly different people. My point is that the things that liberals find "great" about Paul are also present in Sanders, only without the subtext of States Rights. He's saying what the barely awake left-wingers believe that Paul's saying to them.

Because there was a real risk of a Ron Paul win in NH, and/or that what Paul supporters are there are going to jump ship to Huntsman.

IMO Huntsman can't really afford to waste his money on negative ads against third-tier candidates. Realistically, he has no chance in 2012 and he should be setting the stage for a 2016 run, which probably means focusing on building name recognition with positive ads about himself. But failing that, he needs to paint the entire GOP field as insane to benefit himself, as the only moderate in the room who isn't Romney.

Nice try... Paul didn't even write those racist letters. Paul goes out of his way to talk about the problems for minorities which the drug war and the foreign wars cause. Paul publicly talks about his colleagues anti-immigrant anti-islam anti gay remarks. Now he's being pinned as a racist because of some unknown staffer 20 years ago- too ironic.

The ad spot is ridiculous. Everything was taken out of context. Huntsman is willfully misleading, i.e., lying in his ad. Sad.

Thats the most ignorant ad I have seen... Do your research people... ron paul walked away from the interview because CNN has nothing better to do but pester him about newspaper clipping they found years ago over and over and over again... Paul has denounced those articles for years and said he did not support that thinking then or now. They just have nothing bad to say about him... Let start talking about all the other candidates... bet we could go on and on about them. Romney is the white Obama (Pro- Abortion, and helped draft Obama-Care), Santorum doesnt even have his name on enough ballots to win the Republican nominee, so stop wasting your time there.
