Headline of the Year: CNN Writes Presidential Slash Fiction

Posted by on Thu, Dec 29, 2011 at 11:30 AM

Here, brought to my attention by Slog tipper Zan and captured by the good folks at Reddit/politics, is the best headline of 2011, thanks to CNN:

"Gingrich Plunges, Santorum Surges." It's not just a headline, it could be the best work of microfiction published in 2011, too. There's so much subtext here: It's a love story, a piece of erotica, a dynamic struggle between two egomaniacs for the fate of the free world. There are worlds hidden inside those four words. Thanks to CNN for laser-engraving that image into my occipital lobe for all eternity.

Paul, you hereby owe us all a kitten video, for puting that horrible image into our brains. I have shit to do tomorrow, and now I won't be able to sleep.

Those kittens better be damn cute! ¬¬

I love how this seed planted a decade ago is finally realizing its full potential. It's SO BEAUTIFUL.

These are getting entirely too common and obvious. I really think that the MSM is totally in on it and enjoying the hell out of it just like the rest of us.

This is beautiful.

@2 & 4 are both right. This has been percolating for a decade, and is finally paying off huge. And all these subtle santorum headlines can't be mere coincidence; the newsies have to be in on it (or at least some of their headline writers).

Love it.

Boy, those Santorum jokes just never get old...

Actually, they did. A long time ago.

Having been born just two years before the APA decided teh gay was not a diagnosable subspecies of crazy, having been in middle school when Rock Hudson came out, having speculated about Michael Jackson once his record sales started getting really big and his nose stated getting really small, I have just enough residual homophobia left over to really lust to see Newt and Rick caught together in a Rocky Mountain love nest.
