Now that they realized America is paying attention, House Republicans have decided to approve the payroll tax cut extensions:

Back-to-back voice vote approvals of the two-month special measure by the Senate and House came in mere seconds with no debate, just days after House Republican leaders had insisted that full-blown negotiations on a full-year bill were the only way to prevent an immediate tax increase on Jan. 1.

Wonkette points out that John Boehner's heart did not grow three sizes today. He still sounds like a gruff-hearted old Scrooge:

“It may not have been politically the smartest thing in the world,” Boehner said, humbly, of the fight, “but let me tell you what. I think our members waged a good fight.”

“I’ve talked to enough members over the last 24 hours who believe that, ‘Hey, we don’t like this two month extension [but] if you can get this fixed, why not do the right thing for the American people, even though it’s not exactly what we want.”
