X-Factor Pakistan

Posted by on Thu, Dec 22, 2011 at 11:12 AM

As Slog tipper Paul says, "Makes the Jackass guys look like preening debutantes."

Some of those are old tricks—florescent bulbs are dramatic but relatively mild, as are the brittle blocks—asbestos?—you break over people's bodies. (Though I worry a little about the stuntmen's long-term respiratory health.) And the bed o' nails is an old one. I also find it odd to see so little blood until the after-shots, which sets my Barnum radar a-buzzin'. But still—impressive showmanship! I've never seen the ride-a-motorcycle-over-the-head trick before. And that fall through the electrified lightbulbs is spectacular.

Sorry to nit-pick, but I think that was from India, not Pakistan. At the end the little kid is waving and Indian flag.

I saw him waving the Indian flag, but I thought maybe they were guests from next door...

This is an Indian group on an Indian TV show. The column at this link seems authoritative enough to settle the matter:

You don't need asbestos blocks. Actually, a stiff concrete block can be used. I've seen it done as a demo. Real concrete, though not the same mix as you'd use for patio block, and a real sledgehammer.

It's a circus trick that many people in a particular offshoot of martial arts perform. As a martial artist, I've never really understood the point-- the people I saw performing it weren't really that well trained as artists. But crowds love it.

I don't know what they're using for lights. I've never seen that done before. But I doubt they can be real fluorescent tubes. Otherwise, they'd have to clear the room. Mercury vapor and all.

Just to give some metrics, if a healthy person wanted to do an impressive martial arts fling kick, worthy of doing on stage in front of a crowd, it would take about 4 years training. If you wanted to kick out a concrete block, that would be closer to 6 years training.

On the other hand, I've seen a fairly talentless "teacher" of this kind of thing. He would bust wooden slats over students after just 3 months or so "training". (I suspect 3 weeks would have been enough). He would hammer through a concrete block placed on top the abdomen of a "student" who had been with him about 18 months.

It takes a lot of sit-ups.

Dude, you have to make this correction. SLOG would be all over it if Rick Perry confused Pakistan and India.
