We've seen a teaser, but this is the first official Dark Knight Rises trailer:

I feel like they could have done better than Hathaway if they were going for a sultry catwoman, but I'm hoping for a pleasant suprise.

More Gary Oldman as Gordon, less of everything else.

OK, I loved the first two, especially the second one (too long, but awesome nonetheless).

But I just saw a scene from the new Batman as a preview at the IMAX showing of the new Mission Impossible (am I an action movie nerd, or what?) The scene featured some insane, mind-blowing action involving airplanes. But all I came away with was: I CAN'T UNDERSTAND AN EFFING WORD ANYONE IS SAYING!!! It was deeply annoying and really got in the way of appreciating the mind-blowing action involving airplanes. Apparently, Bane can't be understood throughout the movie. Seriously!?

Also, Nolan and crew filmed in Philadelphia instead of Chicago, where they filmed the first two. Which I just don't get. Suddenly, we get to the third movie, and Gotham City looks completely different! WTF?

As for MI:Ghost Protocol, well, it was kick-ass in parts, and Tom Cruise isn't unbearable to watch. Simon Pegg is a lark, as usual.

doesn't look like there's very much Batman in this one.

A Batman movie with Marion Cotillard AND Hines Ward?

I find this oddly compelling...

I saw the ubertrailer before Mission Impossible, as well. Bane can barely be understood, so I hope they re-record or remix his dialogue before the release next year. But seems pretty menacing. Interesting that they're going for an anti-establishment movement that Bane spearheads.

As for Gotham City, it looked different between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, too. The artistic team likely chooses a look that best matches the overall mood of the film.

@3, 6 Gotham did look different between begins and DK...except for half the movie where they filmed in the exact same locations, like all of the chase scenes. Seriously, the exact same spots! I'm glad they filmed in different cities. It's a breath of fresh air to the look of the film.

I thought the trailer looked great.

@3,6 - saw the same preview last night before Mission Impossible and couldn't understand a word Bane said either. That scene was awesome, but I wouldn't have had any idea what movie it was if my action-movie-nerd partner hadn't told me ahead of time. Looks like I need to find a theater with closed captioning for this one.

Also I think Tom Hardy is hot and I was sad that his face is obscured.

Who is Bane and why should I care about him? I've never read the comic books, and in the Animated Series he was some luchadore guy, and in Batman and Robin he was ha ha ha ha ha ha.

So what should I expect from him? I like that he's wearing a Hannibal Lecter mask and not a wrestling getup, but I have yet to be intrigued. Unlike the Joker or the Penguin or Catwoman, it doesn't seem to me like his reputation precedes him enough to make his mere presence compelling to anybody those audience members already invested in previous iterations of the franchise. (Then again, maybe that lack of widespread appeal is precisely why he's such a non-presence in this particular teaser.)

Michael Cain and Gary Oldman, though, that looks fun.

In the early 90's he was kind of a big deal, though in the early 90's comic were generally pretty ass.

@3: Philly is the perfect location for a Nolan Batman film. I'm so happy about that part that I'm willing to (for now) ignore the fact that Bane completely incomprehensible. Seriously, wander around Center City (Philly's downtown) at 3am and in half an hour you'll be expecting Batman to drop from the nearest rooftop.

(The DC universe has always been a little deliberately fuzzy on where precisely "Gotham" was in relation to "Metropolis". Sometimes Gotham was Brooklyn to Metropolis' Manhattan, but just as often as not it's been a somewhat smaller city a little to the south, i.e. Philadelphia.)

D'oh: except that it wasn't shot in philly at all. A combination of Pittsburgh, Newark and Manhattan was used for the (American) location shots.

The necklace that Selina is trying on at :50 is (at least in design) the same one Bruce's father gave his mother in Batman Begins. Here's an image for comparison.

The necklace broke during the mugging, so it seems unlikely it's supposed to be the same one. But I'm interested to know why the filmmakers used the same design.

@13 Yeah, the one chase scene in this trailer (I haven't seen the extended preview) with the Batwing is racing down Smithfield Street in downtown Pittsburgh. What you don't see (due to the angle) is the mural of Andrew Carnegie and Warhol getting perms.

The scene on the steps of the building with columns is Carnegie Mellon University (took seemingly forever to shoot) and of course, Heinz Field becomes a crater.

Rules for action trailers:

1. If the movie is specifically being marketed as the conclusion (1:39) to the franchise, it means the plot is weak and the movie sucks.

2. If there's a shot of hordes of generic underdog bad people (e.g. outcast punk mutant teens, experimental monkeys, or terribly frightening 7 foot tall convicts who've escaped from prison and are shown fist-pumping GUNS in the air like mercenary guerillas (1:05)) staging a revolution to wage war on the privileged good people, Eloi and Morlock style, it means the plot is weak and the movie sucks.

3. If the trailer uses the word "Epic," even once, especially in print and SUPER-Especially in conjunction with the word "Conclusion" (again 1:39), it means the plot is weak and the movie sucks.

4. Smaller red flags like a man outrunning an explosion and the trailer opening with creepy child singing aside, rules 1-3 are reasons enough to be very skeptical.

As a P.S. - Credit where credit is due, the first 2 movies have been good so far. This trailer just REEKS of warning signs that they can already count on a box office draw from returning customers, and if this movie sucks it's no skin off the studio's ass.

I want to be more excited about this, but I just feel like Catwoman is kind of a lame character. But, who am I kidding? They're going to get my money ...

And I also think it's cool that they chose to change it up and shoot outside of Chicago. I'm interested to see how the different architecture inspires different kinds of shots. I like the idea of Gotham as this lurching, ominous, amorphous city.
