Coming Soon to Capitol Hill: The Best Gelato I've Ever Eaten

Posted by on Mon, Dec 19, 2011 at 3:53 PM

Coming soon to Capitol Hill!
  • Kelly O
  • Coming soon to Capitol Hill!
According to Capitol Hill Seattle, D'Ambrosio Gelateria Artigianale will be opening on Capitol Hill at 12th and Pine sometime this winter.

BEST NEWS EVER!

D'Ambrosio, which is currently located in Ballard, makes the best gelato I've ever eaten. (Read all about how they make it here.) And their second location will be even bigger, with more flavors and more vegan selections, and I won't have to go all the way to Ballard to get it! (Sadly they opened up shop about six months after I moved out of Ballard. Because the gelato Gods wanted to punish me for leaving Ballard, apparently.)

HURRY UP AND OPEN, I AM HUNGRY.

CHS has the full scoop (ha ha!) on their second location right here.

Not bad.

The best is in Firenze (Florence), a shop in the merchant district, actually.

Awesome, cant wait for this to open. I haven't been here since I moved out of Ballard. Great to see this shop expand, the owner is a great guy, I remember it was a one man operation.

Also just for the record Will in Seattle prefers frozen Obama turds to gelato.

It's great, just too high priced for mere mortals.

@2 is correct. It's really really cheap there.

IMHO, D'Ambrosio gelato is as good or better than almost all the gelato you get in Italy. (I've been to Italy three times for a total of almost ten weeks.) The exception is Grom's in Italy, which absolutely kicks gelato ass. And, yeah, it's a little pricey but WAAAY worth it. And frankly D'Ambrosio is not that much more expensive than the good stuff in Italy.

Were the two ice cream shops, the two frozen yogurt places, and the frozen custard place within that three block radius not enough?

Not to dampen your spirits or melt your permafrost, but D'Ambrosio uses (high quality) concentrates and mixes, which he runs through a batch freezer. It's fine gelato, but it's certainly not "artisanal." That would be truly small-batch gelato made in tiny batches with local ingredients. Not with imported, commercially distributed powdered emulsifiers, preservatives and texturizers.

Cornichon, where do you get your info?

Are you saying their website is lying? Are you accusing D'Ambrosio of false advertising?

They say no preservatives. You say they use them.

They say the make it fresh every day. You say it isnt artisinal and isnt small-batch gelato.

What do you know that everyone else doesnt?

@9 dangit Mr. Holden, you have to burst the bubble? And anyway, isn't the Pike/Pine meaning of "artisanal" understood to be "slightly closer to artisanal than last year's model?"

Another over-priced treat for the up-scaling of Capitol Hill. I can picture the line of strollers out the door. I'm sure it's gonna be delicious, but only for those who have the money to waste.

I'm on the side of Fainting Goat, just because it has the best salted caramel ice cream/gelato/frozen custard I've ever tasted.
