Even More Young Adults Insured Under Obama's Health Care Reform Law

Posted by on Wed, Dec 14, 2011 at 8:12 AM

Good news related to one of the most talked about—and popular—provisions of the act:

WASHINGTON — The number of young adults lacking medical coverage has shrunk by 2.5 million since the new health care overhaul law took effect, according to a new analysis the Obama administration is to release Wednesday...

Under the health overhaul, children can remain on their parents' health insurance plans until they turn 26, and families have flocked to sign up young adults making the transition to work in a challenging economic environment.

This alone shows the president to be worth re-electing. This is great news for millions. And it will undoubtedly save lives and be a help in tough economic times. Now let's listen as the ridiculous right twists this into bad news.

i spent 10 minutes on sunday telling my MIL that the people now getting coverage under the healthcare law weren't layabouts getting something for free. after hearing her granddaughter is now covered under this very provision, and reminding her that she already recieves medical care subsidized by the federal gov't, and that 50 million 'murkins are uninsured because they can't afford it, she was still unconvinced.

she has no internet access, no cable, and only reads the everett herald.

@1 it's bad news because it took away the right for the insurance companies and their shareholders to decide to do this. Therefore, it's a tax on the people who invested on the company, because the policy compels them to insure these people without being able to make money on them.

Literally, this.

Because of this, my daughter who is 22 and has the kind of job you would imagine a 22 year old to have - decent pay for her age, but shit for insurance, is covered under my corporate plan. We have awesome insurance benefits where I work, and now so does she.

Her employer offers COBRA and the ususal 'pay through your fucking nose and asshole' that people her age simply can't afford yet.

I'm pretty pleased with this because I know she's covered.

Also...it's not free. I pay for it. I pay MORE to have my daughter covered under my plan. It's free for HER but I pay more.

I'm okay with this..

@5, No, it's not for free. Parents have to pay to have their kids on their insurance. This isn't a government handout it's just allowing people to buy insurance for family members. You know, free market, freedom of choice, all that good stuff.

@6, wow, that's just about the most absurd cherry picking of quotes I've seen since Cheney left the presidency. These people are NOT layabouts getting something for free. The old bitch who supports your conservative idiocy is the one who's subsidized by the federal government.

@5&6 thank you for demonstrating again why conservatives are against the health care law and virtually all real reform of our shitty health care system. It's because you don't understand how any of this stuff really works and absolutely refuse to learn anything. You have chosen ignorance and thus you are conservative.

And let me just point out that everyone who campaigns on a promise of repealing "Obamacare" is saying that what they want is 2.5million more young people to become instantly uninsured. Throwing these people off of their parents insurance will increase costs for everyone and make these 2.5million people less healthy and dramatically more likely to face bankruptcy due to health care related expenses. That is what repeal of this law means. Nothing but hurting Americans.

@3 attempting to profit from someone's poor health is a shitty investment anyway.

It makes me sad how classist this law is though. Now young adults from middle-class backgrounds can take "entry-level" jobs through age 26 that don't offer health insurance but those from poorer backgrounds have to gamble their health or forgo those opportunities.

evidently higher forms of expression, like sarcasm, elude you bitch.

let us help you out:
thank you for demonstrating again why the Liberals health care law has made our shitty health care system even worse. It's because you don't understand how any of this stuff really works and absolutely refuse to learn anything.

Obama has never run a business or worked in the health care field.

It shows in his shitty plan.
