The Scene Right Now at Occupy Seattle

Posted by on Fri, Dec 9, 2011 at 1:48 PM

About an hour ago, we got a breathless tip that 25-60 police officers in riot gear were lined up on the north end of Seattle Central Community College, preparing to give Occupiers—who have been ordered to vacate the SCCC campus today—the boot a hand with their heavy lifting.

The reality is much more banal: The uniformed cops (no riot gear to be seen) were part of a funeral procession leaving the Bonney-Watson Funeral Home across the street. Still, the scene at SCCC was a bit tense as a cavalcade of cop cars cruised slowly past protesters busy dismantling tents, raking up fallen leaves, and adding to the huge mound of trash piled in front of the school's Broadway Performance Hall. "No word yet on where we're headed," says Thomas, an Occupy Seattle spokesman, "but there are a few people out there busy on finding us a place." Thomas says that in the meantime, people are moving their tents and large items into storage—and, of course, the group has stated it's intention to keep one educational tent on campus for "teach-ins." Here are a few pics of the scene:

I've never before heard a funeral procession called 'banal'.

@2, funeral escort cops at the neighborhood mortuary are the definition of banal. Not for the bereaved, certainly. But for the neighborhood? Absolutely.

Surpassed in cop funeral banality only by bagpipers.

what an utter fucking failure. the only thing occupy accomplished was to make everyone in the the neighborhood (or at least 99% of us...) hate them. This falls in the top 10 of Seattle's all-time EPIC FAILS

Yeah, I concede that cops often have very banal job assignments.

But I think the word we are looking for would be 'un-eventful'. Or, in a stretch, 'quotidian'.

And bagpipers do, in fact, rule.

IN HELL.

Sad that they are being forced out over some trumped up flimsy pretexts by the S.C.C.C. leadership used.

The super wealthy will treat us to a blizzard of political ads next year, all funded by shadowy anonymous donors, yet people of modest means aren't even allowed a location to gather and make their voices heard.

That's a stunning double standard.

Im sure they'll find some elementary school playground to crash uninvited. If the admins complain, they'll scream back "WERE DOING THIS FOR YOUR CHILDREN!! WHY ARE YOU AGAINST US!!".

Yes you can you fucking drama queen, you just can't camp and then welcome fucking meth heads to set up shop if your fucked up little commune of crusties, anarchists, hobos, bums, juggalos and only about 4 people who may have their heads screwed on right.

Does the giant mountain of trash have a name yet? I'd hate to see what kind of a mess these people would make in the woods if they did any REAL camping.

Those "giant mounds of trash" have now been moved into trash bins. Everyone who I saw there a few minutes ago was cleaning. The camp looks much better as of right now.

"The camp looks much better as of right now."

The camp is gone. And don't let the door hit u in the ass.

By the way, is this how Holden thinks the Revolution would have ended, with a giant fuckibg embarrassing back down?

What @10 said.

@14 - I walked by the camp last night and saw unrelenting tidiness everywhere: little piles of raked leaves, tarps neatly folded and stacked, several people on garbage duty.. Definitely neater than any out-in-the-woods campsite I've ever been to.

FWIW

I think I should add that the Faculty Union was present and intends to be present until very late into the night. The Union has been very vocal about how they want Occupy to stay and disagree with the bogus reasons the administration have cited. As a student at SCCC, I have received many emails from the administration, namely, Paul Kirkpatrick, citing that the students don't want the camp at our school. This is not only untrue, but they have not asked the students or held a student forum to come to this conclusion. The administration is completely and utterly out of touch with the student body and are using us and our safety as an excuse to further their own agenda as to what they think the campus's function in the community should be: nonexistent.

@14

While the amount of accumulated trash was quite a bit more than you'd find at the campsites of our delightfully anal-retentive Pacific Northwest Outdoorsmen, it was also not so much as you'd find in a real shantytown, either.

At this point in the Occupy story, I'm somewhat surprised to find myself not at all opposed to building visible urban shantytowns as a form of protest.

What I object to is governing such a shantytown via mandatory consensus, antirepresentationalism, enforcement by consent only, the people's mic, and the rest of the raft of demonstration-organizing practices floated in from the Global Justice Movement.

In other news, the RANK AND FILE of local 19 ILWU voted at their union meeting to NOT support the shut down. So I'm sure we'll hear the refrain "fuck democracy" we're doing it anyway, in which case, what is it exactly that Occupy Seattle wants if it is not democracy?

@21 - Well, since it is anonymous, there's no way to prove by whom that was actually written. So perhaps not the best source of evidence.

#20 since your not a longshoreman, and you really probably don't know shit- best to shut your mouth. Half the union isn't even allowed to vote. Second of all, there is no way my union can allow a vote to go through that will put them publicly on the chopping block for lawsuits. its called tact- get some.
