Dreamy Jon Huntsman Now Less Dreamy

Posted by on Tue, Dec 6, 2011 at 1:32 PM

The somewhat reasonable Republican presidential candidate is backpedaling on global warming now:

Republican presidential candidate Jon Huntsman appeared to take a notably more skeptical view towards current climate change science Tuesday, saying that the "scientific community owes us more" on the issue and that not enough solid research exists to "formulate policies" based on global warming.

How many backpedaled issues will it take before Huntsman is completely indistinguishable from Mitt Romney, do you think?

Maybe I'm projecting too much here, but I still see an awful lot of space between "we need more science to guide prudent policy" and "the entire field of climate science is a fraud perpetuated by communists to take my SUV away."

I am paraphrasing in the latter case, but not much.

But... but... but... he said he believes in global warming on TWITTER!

Maybe Obama-Chu-Immelt can reveal why they cut all fuel cell and hydrogen funding since it is the one rational way to eliminate all CO2 from the industrial cycle.

Apparently, Jon Huntsman doesn't know how to operate the Google. It's pretty easy.

He must be looking for energy company contributions.

In other news, 'trickle-down' economics only helps the wealthy, and privatized health care doesn't work.

I'm okay with this, because I took a look around Huntsman's campaign page and found a lot of things that were not very dreamy at all. If, by some twist of fate, he was the Republican candidate for president, I would not even be tempted to vote for him.

But if, by a similar twist, he was the Republican candidate and he actually WON, I wouldn't hate it as much as I would if any of the others won. He's still a Republican, but as far as Republicans go, he's more like a gunshot to the ass than a gunshot to the stomach.

If you believed for a second that any of the republican nominees would ever do anything concrete and effective on climate change then their respective campaigns succeeded in deceiving you.

Huntsman is against government regulation. Denying global warming is the next logical step.

Reprising my comments from the earlier Huntsman thread, people who think Huntsman is a moderate haven't been paying attention to anything except a few seemingly oddly sane statements on issues such as evolution and global warming - and now that it appears he might actually have a chance with the Republican base, he's eager to dispel the notion that he's too sane for them on those issues, as we see with his returning to the Republican fold of reality denial on climate change.

Meanwhile, his budget plan remains bugfnck nuts. In short, he wants to eliminate taxes on unearned income (capital gains, dividends), eliminate all credits and deductions, and greatly reduce tax rates for all brackets. The truly wealthy would pay no taxes, the top few percent would see a big tax cut, the middle class would more or less break even (it depends on the credits and deductions they currently can claim), and lower-middle-class families and the working poor would take it in the neck (tax rates mattering much less to such people than credits and deductions). Oh, and total tax revenues would fall, making the deficit worse. Some plan.

Every time I find a Republican that I think might be a beleaguered man* of principle trying to restore honor and sanity to the party, I just end up getting burned when he inevitably knuckles under and starts quoting Limbaugh. I am forced to conclude that my impression is correct: that the party is just so completely corrupt - spiritually as well as literally - that it is impossible for a really decent person to be associated with it, even with the best of intentions.

Anyway, fuck Huntsman with a tire iron. If he thinks it's a reasonable trade-off to advance his career at the cost of perpetuating the sham "debate" that keeps us from acting to mitigate climate change, he's a fucking sociopath.

* - Not to be discriminatory, here, I just can't think of an example of a Republican woman who isn't either a shrieking batshit-insane harpy or a docile know-nothing housewife

Westlake, son! 14
Believe or not in Global Warming, but it doesn't take much common sense to realize if we put pollution in the air someone somewhere on the Earth is going to breath that shit back into their lungs. Last I checked air isn't generally available in purified personal bag form. We're all working from the same air supply day to day. How is it in anyone's ultimate self-interest to pollute the air? Hey you made another million dollars, but now you have cancer. Dick.

surprised that so many people fall for the notion of there being any republican party candidate that could be acceptable in any way shape or form. don't fall for the farce. haven't you seen the republican party in action? individuals are irrelevant. the party governs one way & will govern one way regardless of who is leading them. they are a nihilist fascist alliance. that is how they will govern. doesn't matter who the candidate is. don't fool yourself. there are no reasonable nihilists. there are no reasonable fascists. there are no reasonable republicans.

@12 and 17 - Susan Collins, too, actually. Soon the Republicans will be trying to force Maine to secede from the union.

@21 as a religious conservative, it seems like his 'conscience' is the problem. he should stick w/ his science instead.
