Meet the Republican Presidential Nominee at Hudson News, Across from Gate A

Self-proclaimed Republican presidential nominee Newt Gingrich finally hits the big time.
  • Self-proclaimed Republican presidential nominee Newt Gingrich finally hits the big time.

Yesterday, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich declared himself the Republican presidential nominee, and next week, you can meet him and his wife Callista in person at the Hudson News in Washington D.C.'s Union Station. And not just any Hudson News—it's the one across from Gate A.

Yup, nothing screams the big time like a book signing at a Hudson News.

Does the city not have any real bookstores except for in the airport?

Hey, I'll give him this, he's being more productive with his airport layovers than I ever have. Usually I just wander around the duty-free shops and stare at stuff that I don't want to buy, but maybe next time I'll set up shop and start autographing shit.

It's an iconic train station, people. A completely fabulous one and a national treasure, through which more than 30 million people a year pass. This ain't like podunk SeaTac airport.

I'm not against multiple marriages, generally, but in the case of Callista's bio, shouldn't it say "currently"?

"Callista Gingrich is currently married to Newt..."

Wait, it's not an airport?

Shit, dude doesn't have an excuse.

I have a disturbing compulsion to play devil's advocate for people I loathe, so in that spirit: perhaps the signing was arranged months ago, and it at least says something good about him that he didn't cancel it after it became inconvenient/not flashy enough for his new front-runner status.

And I forgot, it was a Callista and Newt event that kicked off the glitterbombing craze, wasn't it? I'm sorry it happened to Dan by mistake more recently, but the one against Newt and Callista earlier was terrific. Maybe another, especially since it's at one of the greatest transit hubs in the country for easy escape?

I find it odd that the "bio" for Calista doesn't even mention what she's going to be signing. Her most prominent attribute, apparently, is that she's married to someone famous.

Oh . . . I'm now being told that we already knew this. Gotcha.

@#8
Well, according to the flyer in the photograph she is an executive in a company that produced many audiobooks and documentaries. So maybe she'll be autographing CDs and DVDs of those. You know, as production executives so often do.

@1, @2, @3, it's a great train station, but a crappy little Hudson News. There are tons of real bookstores that Newt could have picked instead (like the Kramerbooks where the President was recently shopping, or Politics and Prose), and tons of better spaces within the train station that he could have picked instead.

The only real plus of that bookstore for Newt is that it's probably the closest one to the Capitol, so he can pop in there for a book signing in between lobbying current congresspeople.

Callista's signing a book about American exceptionalism for the pre-Tiffany-shopping set (oh wait, I think T sells a silver rattle or teething ring or something). The ears of her cuddly alter ego, Ellis the elephant, look just like Callista's adorable helmet-hair!

@10, I can't help but guess that maybe the Hudson Group conglomerate is tied to Newt's lobbying interests somehow, and that's why it's a Hudson store....

A Mic Check would be appropriate, I think.

@3 Bingo. It's a HUGE traffic corridor along that Hudson. And being near the capitol, lots of fawning hill legislative aides will be available for good press pics. Not a bad choice at all. The B&N around the corner would have been better, but Hudson isn't bad.

@10, 11, though Regnery Publishing has been accused of diverting sales of its books "away from retail outlets and to wholly owned subsidiary organizations" of its parent company (Wikipedia), allegedly costing authors royalties (Jerome Corsi and others sued over it), Hudson News appears to be unrelated and the Hudson Group is owned by Dufry, AG of Basel, Switzerland.

Have any of you even heard of Union Station? It's spectacular, and a better place for a book signing than any Barnes & Noble or Costco or even Elliott Bay Books. Thousands of people pass through every day.

Anyone notice that Callista Gingrich bears an uncanny resemblance to the Winter Warlock from Frosty the Snowman?
