Occupy Shuts Down Ways and Means Committee Hearing, Declaring: "There Will Be No Business as Usual."

Posted by on Mon, Nov 28, 2011 at 1:57 PM

I'm inside today's only scheduled hearing in the state capital, where some Occupiers have taken over a meeting of the House Ways and Means Committee as hundreds of other Occupiers bang on the doors to the hallway and demand to be let in. A "citizens arrest" was just made of the entire legislature, and here's the latest mic check:

Many people are wondering why we're disrupting this meeting when many people want to testify. The reason we're disrupting this meeting is that many of us over the last three years have testified, and lobbied, and voted, and the governor and the legislature have given us no choice... This is what we have to do for them to listen to us.

In response, chairman Ross Hunter (D-48) declared the meeting temporarily suspended because of concerns from the fire marshal about overcrowding.

I support occupy, but I'm not sure what this action will accomplish.

I hope they threw Jennifer Fox's murdered fetus(es) up on the podium. That would really send a message.

This is progress, girls! Everyone who never votes, go and shut down meetings! Show them your power, girls! This is direct democracy. Eli LOVES it. It's otherwise known as MOB RULE. Eli also loves that, unless it doesn't go his way, and then HE GETS PISSED OFF. Democracy is hard, isn't it, Eli?

What we did was send a strong message to legislators that we no longer sit idly by while they cut services to people who need them while tax breaks for million and billionaires remain on the books.

What wasn't reported in this story was that the pics posted was of a group of teachers who were issuing an arrest warrant to the legislature for not fully funding education, as our constitution dictates clearly. The courts have clearly ruled that they are out of compliance.

It is more than ironic that Jesse was arrested in this act.
