The Storm That Lasted for 200 Days

Posted by on Tue, Nov 22, 2011 at 9:07 AM

It happened on Saturn.

It's longest recorded storm on that planet since the one observed in 1903—it lasted 150 days.
On the same day that Cassini's high-resolution cameras captured the first images of the storm, Cassini's radio and plasma wave instrument detected the storm's electrical activity, revealing it to be a convective thunderstorm. The storm's active convecting phase ended in late June, but the turbulent clouds it created linger in the atmosphere today.
A storm on Saturn is more like a volcano eruption on our planet.

Aw, shucks. And I was so looking forward to going to my vacation home there for the holidays.

It would appear the effects of global warmer are more far reaching than at first suspected.

Are those Earth days or Saturn days? If Earth, then this is totally Saturnist .

That's only, like, 83 earth days... no biggie.

Or is it 480 Saturn days? Even then, it's only a small fraction of a year on Saturn. It works out to be less than 2% of a year. Our equivalent would be a seven-day storm. That happens quite often on this planet. No biggie….

The trend is towards longer lasting storms.

I blame galactic warming, and Exxon.

@6: If and only if a seven-day storm is an event that happens once in a hundred years on earth, is this equivalent.

@12 My kid LOVES the Great Red Spot.
@11 Not really, but I was really just playing with numbers that have no correlation. 200 earth days or 480 saturn days, or 2% of a Saturn year... yes, it's a lot of storm there. Especially if you compare the size of the storm to the size of earth.

It's all a big classroom on the evolution of a solar system. And Cassini is our profeesor.
