Anthropocene Today

The score...

Humans: 7 billion; tigers: 3000.

According to the Al Jazeera report, about of half of world's tiger population lives in India. And in India these tigers live close to or with poor people. The tigers often attack and kill their means of living, cows, or them. The solution? Those who live in rich countries must start paying serious bucks for these animals. Westerners can not have it both ways; you can't feel for tigers, fret about their extinction and yet do nothing substantial for the people who have no other choice but to live in the jungle and subsist on a few cows. As one poor man says, "Who cares about the tiger, my wife is dead." As for the Chinese: If they are willing to pay a high price for a tiger's death, we must pay a high price for its life.

Good Morning Charles,
This month's National Geographic magazine has an article on tigers and other big cats. One photo is of an adult male villager in India (?) being prepared for cremation. He was killed by a tiger. Evidently, tigers are quite a problem in rural south Asia.

@1 in that same article is a photo of captured poachers. The guy second from the left looking defiantly at the camera is more bad ass than any tiger. Until that guy can feed his family doing something else, those tigers are fucked.

@2: all megafauna in asia and africa is fucked. lions, tigers, elephants, rhinos, apes. if we want to save them, we should introduce them to north america. and never go camping again.

I didn't watch this video, on account of my suspicion it's ANOTHER animal snuff flick sponsored by the stranger.

Charles, stop saying shit that makes me agree with you. It makes me question my grasp on sanity even more.

@4: You can watch it, the tiger remains unharmed. I had the same suspicion as you before watching it, though.

I am distracted by those crazy-ass tourists! Why would anyone go on a tour like that? 1) you could get eaten by a tiger. 2) if you don't get eaten, you've succeeded in stressing out a tiger 3) Why go all that way to finally see a tiger, and waste the whole experience frantically shooting photos?
