Know Where You are Going Today

Posted by on Mon, Nov 21, 2011 at 1:09 PM

WaPo:

Air Force officials say an airman armed with a pistol has barricaded himself in a building at a Colorado Air Force base that controls all GPS satellites, but operations haven’t been disrupted.
How is that even possible? One location is the center for all GPS satellites? And a madman currently controls this one and only center? It seems we are always just one step away from the end of our world.

Isn't this the opening of a James Bond movie?

Well. Say good bye to Fort Knox and/or the moon.

It's not even possible. Did you actually read the article?

"The airman is in a building where personnel prepare for deployments, Thibault said.

Control rooms for GPS and other military satellites are in a heavily protected inner compound surrounded by fences and staffed with armed guards."

But thanks for the Fox & Friends-quality commentary.

There are backups, but most people don't know where they are, and you're not cleared to know that.

The security service people don't even have access to the control rooms or other sensitive areas on Schreiver. If an alarm goes off, they have to stand outside the area until a person with clearance comes and checks it out.
And there are way scarier things than just gps satellites there.

From the story (which some of us actually read before commenting):

"Control rooms for GPS and other military satellites are in a heavily protected inner compound surrounded by fences and staffed with armed guards."

@ 9, naturally. I had to look it up to make sure that they hadn't renamed Peterson AFB.

well no wonder I got lost (again) today. I can't find my ass with both hands on the best of days, but when a nut case takes over GPS an hour or so South of me, even the navigation in my phone can't help me.
