Introducing the Slog vs. Gawker Holiday Charity Challenge!

Posted by on Mon, Nov 21, 2011 at 2:49 PM

sloggawker1.jpg

It’s the holidays, and people are hungry.

In the last three years, the number of hungry families in Washington State has nearly doubled. In 2008, there were 88,000 hungry homes in this state. Now there are more than 160,000 homes with families who don’t have enough to eat.

They need our help. It costs only 67 cents to feed a family of three a meal through Northwest Harvest. This is urgent—times are terrible—so we’ve retired the Strangercrombie auction to concentrate on just raising money that goes straight to help some of the very neediest. (This is also not the year to ask local businesses to give away things to auction—they’re struggling, too.)

Let’s see how much we can help, Slog! Meanwhile, we can also show how much more generous (and smarter, and better looking) Slog readers are than Gawker’s by raising more money for charity than they do. From now through December 24th, we'll be tracking our charitable kicking of Gawker’s ass right here.

Let’s get started!

Plus, giving to the needy makes you an awesome person. Give to Northwest Harvest right now—whatever amount you can afford—and then forward us your receipt and we'll update your commenter handle with a tag that says AWESOME PERSON. Because you are awesome for helping.

Give now!

Sadly, I understand it is worse here. I'll be serving dinner under the Morrison Bridge again this year, and we're expecting 1000 plus. Give me a few and I'll chip in.

I'll be honest, I'm a bit disappointed. This season I am Gainfully Employed and was planning on giving to Strangercrombie once it started up. Not that there's ever been a shortage of worthwhile causes to give to, but I wanted to be one of the cool Strangercrombie kids.

But hey, looks like we have a handy and noble substitute cause. Food for people who don't have enough? I can get behind that, sure!

@5, is this instead of Strangercrombie, or in addition to it? That's too bad. Come on, people, open your wallets and show those Gawker wankstains what a real blog commentariat looks like.

@5: This is just like Strangercrombie but with no pesky auction, PLUS the opportunity to hand Gawker its ass all charitable-like! Like Fnarf says, let's show them!!!

And when you donate, you will get a brand-new "AWESOME PERSON" tag on all your Slog comments! YES.

I can't find any info on who's winning. Perhaps it's too early for numbers just yet, I just can't help myself imagining the exciting numbers and charts. :D

@2, way to win the hearts and minds. I was going to but now...I will just donate to NW Harvest without using the Slog link.

This is a worthy cause and I hope lots of folks give, but I can't help but feel that this isn't going to bring in the same amount as Strangercrombie auction. Part of the auction "game" and "high" gets people committed to spending more than they intended, plus folks are often BUYING something that they want, but their $300 goes to charity rather than a store, so it's a WIN/WIN.

This same person, not bidding on a new chair or makeover or club tickets, may make a donation of $100 or so, but I fear that it won't be as much cash.

Still, it's a great cause. Go sloggers, and I hope folks donate a ton. But I'm certainly going to miss Strangercrombie (it's how I've done my major shopping/donating for the last several years)

I will donate $100 to anyone who kicks Will in Seattle as hard as possible in the nuts while shouting "here's your fucking chia pet!" and then uploads the video to Youtube.

Can we at least have some gratuitous cute furry alterna-dudes in underwear with silly props in each of your reminder posts?

Wait, how is SLOG gonna ever be able to beat Gawker? Isn't Gawker a much more widely read site? Like by a very large margin? And are we talking just Gawker itself or all of Gawker Media? Talk about David v. Goliath.

@18 - yeah, it's a nice thought...but the Gawker Media Empire is massive.

We might win if no one tells them about it, is what I'm sayin'.

@18

That's what I was thinking. I even looked up page rankings to see how big the disparity is. I almost suspect this is a clever ruse, and Gawker has no hand in this, they've just been nominated as a fictional rival we should attempt to beat. Every week we can have a Slog post saying 'Oh shit you guys, those Gawker guys are pulling in a bit more than us! Give harder, give faster, go go go!'

Not that that should dissuade anybody. If that is, in fact, the plan, and it works, then great! This is a case where Everyone Is A Winner.

Gawker gave away my password to 1.7 million hacker twats, which I still haven't forgiven them for. Yes, it was stupid of me to use the same password at Gawker as at iTunes, but since I only ever logged into either site ONE TIME, years before the theft, I still blame them. Paypal refunded my money. Which raises the question of how come iTunes takes money out of my Paypal account without asking me for my Paypal password (which is different). Anyways. FUCK THEM.

Where's my fucking tag?

Um. Glad to be raising money for Northwest Harvest, but this Gawker rivalry just took a turn for the weirder. Especially since they don't seem to be participating,
