Occupy Television

Posted by on Fri, Nov 18, 2011 at 4:11 PM

Early today I wrote about Occupy Wall Street:

This is a movement so tailored to the era of reality television, I'd be surprised if there already isn't a show in production.

Which I guess is why I'm not surprised to see the following Craigslist ad:

Part of Occupy Wall Street? Real World 27 Wants You! (Battery Park)

MTV's Real World is seeking cast members to tell their unique stories on our show. If you are over the age of 20 and appear to be between the ages of 20-24, and the description below sounds like you, we want to hear from you!

Are you a part of the OCCUPY WALL STREET movement?

If so, please contact realworldcasting@bunim-murray.com. Your subject heading should be YOUR NAME and WALL STREET.

Please attach 3 RECENT PHOTOS and a brief BIO, including your full NAME, DATE OF BIRTH (for ID purposes only) as well as your CONTACT INFORMATION including PHONE #.

Co-opting the radicals. They did the same damn thing to Flava Flav.

MTV is like that.

Shameless.

On the other hand, it's a good shot for some anarchists, libertarians, fake 1 percenters, communists, and working stiffs to get their 15 minutes of fame and talk about economics, which is more than most people ever do.

MTV has no shame. They'll do a show about just about anything.

(Oh, hi, Dan.)

@5, be nice! It's programs like Real World and Jersey Shore that make enough money so MTV can afford to take a financial risk on buying a run of a few shows with Dan. On the other hand, the excoriation MTV gets for those shows is also why they have to counter with "responsible" college-aimed programming like Dan. Win-win!

@7

Plz provide examples of "responsible college-aimed programming" on MTV.

You're not thinking of "16 and Pregnant," are you?

Wow, I can't get over "Real World 27." Twenty-seven. Twenty-seven. It blows my mind on a number of levels. It's like if they were to come out with "Leonard Part 7" starring Bill Cosby.

"Co-opting the radicals. They did the same damn thing to Flava Flav."

PE was radical. Flava Flav was a buffoon with little pretense of activism.

@8: I think they're referencing MTV's upcoming work with Dan.

@8, yeah, I meant just Dan. Sorry to be unclear. Though one certainly hopes whatever educational value his show may have is complemented by smut smut smut and a healthy dollop of cussin'.

That's pathetic, MTV, but I guess pathetic isn't anything new for you.

Sending my name and birth date and contact info to someone on Craigslist? Seems legit.

Ugh, MTV. That's just disgusting. And yet wholly unsurprising.

Damn, that's some prescience there, Goldy -- you predicted a Craigslist post written a month ago. :D
