There Was That Too

Posted by on Wed, Nov 16, 2011 at 1:48 PM

Oh, right—the glass jar. If I hadn't have ducked, or if I didn't see it coming (which I might not have, what with glitter in my eyes and all), that glass jar would've hit me square in the face. As luck would have it, I did see it coming, and was able to dodge it. So there was that too.

Dang - remember when Justin Bieber got hit with that plastic water bottle chucked from the audience last year? Think of it - you have quicker celebrity reflexes than a 17-year-old one! Well done.

OK. What you've got there is a felony. She should be prosecuted for assault.

Well shit. That's almost not worth the million dollars a year they're paying you.

Almost.

Daniel, let's just put this whole thing behind us. There are lots of people who love you, I love you...and who knows what was happening in the minds of the people who did that to you. It was stupid, unfair, uncalled for and hopefully they'll realize soon enough how wrong they were. And thank you for all the wonderful work you do!

The curious thing is that some people apparently do hate Dan enough to do such a thing (see #1-2 above). What could have led them to such lengths must be interesting to analyze.

Anyway, since nobody gets famous without attracting haters (those who confuse "being successful" with "being an attention whore" -- poor choice of words, isn't it? since it unfairly hurts the sex workers community...), we can conclude that this is an expectable consequence.

Actually, if a glass jar had been chucked at me, I *would* have pressed charges. Not for the glitterbombing but glass? Yikes...

Yeesh... Can you change your mind and press charges now? I can understand not pressing charges if it was just misguided glitter-chucking (although that shit can be very harmful if you inhale and it sticks in your lungs). But a glass jar? Beyond the pale.

Wait, wait... THEY THREW A GLASS JAR??? I thought a glitter bomb was just throwing a hand full of innocuous glitter at someone. Fucking lunatic psychos, you should have pressed charges.

@14 Yeah, me neither. I remember coming across it earlier, but I don't even remember on which site, and that link just brings me to an earlier post. (And when I search for "jar" I find nothing.)

Basically, the glitter-bomber also then threw the glitter JAR at Dan. The jar was heavy glass, and the witness said that everyone heard it thunk. (The witness also said that people later saw it had dented the stage, but that seems a bit unlikely to me.) So, if it had hit him, it could've seriously hurt him.

I'm going to concur with some of the other commenters. Glitter bombing is one thing, a silly gesture of protest that I find pretty funny even when the target is Dan and covering him with glitter is misguided. Throwing a glass jar at someone however is not an act of protest, it's an act of violence and shouldn't be tolerated. At the very least if a student was responsible the college should discipline the GBer since Dan has declined to press charges.

@ Noadi, I couldn't agree more. Before I read this, I thought the idea of pressing charges was misguided and would do far more harm than good. But a glass jar? That is assault, not activism. And unwarranted assault. I hope that transgendered people can find more intelligent and productive representatives in the future. I find it sad when people who have long been the victims of violence resort to unnecessary violent attacks, let alone attacks on their allies.

Ace Reporter Dan Savage hard at work.....

It wasn't even a trans that attacked him.!
no; wait- it WAS a trans.

and they were arrested but it sure wasn't Danny's fault.
No, sorry; they were detained.
and waterboarded. but never arrested...
oh-sorry gang- turns out they were taken out back and shot.
but dammit they deserved it.
cause.....
cause they threw an iron anvil at Danny's head!
No wait, it was a heavy jar!
no, hang on fans; it seems it was a light plastic jar....
no...no....this story is still developing-
wait; it was a baggie!
the possibly trans assailant threw an empty sandwich baggie at Danny"s head!
OMG! he could have been killed!!

These assaults are really hard to understand. Whatever weakness Dan (or any of us) might have on trans issues, which can be quite difficult to fully understand from the outside, is he really the enemy? Someone who tries but is imperfect needs to be assaulted?
